Australian version of IPL?

[rant]Cricket is probably the most popular sport in Australia. But people would rather sit at home with a beer in hand, or watching the cricket with mates over while having a barbie and being able to do whatever you want, rather than actually going there where you can only have light beer and if you misbehave in the slightest, you get thrown out.

You mean the most popular summer sport? Even thought there is only two lol (Cricket, Soccer)

Well cricket is all over Australia. AFL is 4 states and a territory. And rugby is only 2 states and a territory.

I believe it is the most popular sport in Australia.

I obviously must've been mistaken then.

However, even if it is the most popular sport, I don't think that it is a cricket crazy nation.

Sport in Australia is flexible as in people enjoy watching and supporting a variety of sports.

AFL is most popular in the Winter.
Cricket is most popular in the Summer.

I think one is quite enough. Maybe the IPL should be a rotating kind of tournament where it becomes the "International Premier League" instead of the "Indian Premier League" and then the tournament can go from one country to another over the years and become a part of the ICC calendar. That way the local talent from all the countries can get a chance to play in a premier tournament.

Good in theory but as mentioned in this thread, cricket won't get sell outs every match in other countries outside of India. Maybe to begin with it might but in due time you won't see the grounds being packed out like in India. Also finding billionaire owners that are into cricket will be tricky.

Maybe just England and Australia to begin with. Also South Africa might be an option.

About having money to spend and finding billionaires. It need not always be with the big international star players. How about giving local talent more prominence? A lot of us are more excited about seeing more young players emerge.

If it is all about money, then I think even the IPL as it exists now has no chance in the long term.

How would you structure it? Given the IPL limits each side to 4 international players per an 11 and without the money teams are less likely to get many International stars. So wouldn't that be just like the current English and Aussie 20/20 comps with more exposure?

Sean said it. I think Australia is pretty cricket crazy. Just because we dont get as many to the grounds it doesn't matter. My dad doesn't like to go to international games because the beers are like $5.20 and they are only light. (I always hear him and my uncle complaining lol)
I hope this doesn't happen. I'm a big fan of normal Aus domestic cricket.

I meant cricket crazy in the sense that everyone everywhere is fanatical about cricket all year round.

But if this does happen, the only other country that can have as much exposure to the tournament is Australia, but right now I think that the ICC needs to think about how to spread the game of cricket, creating enough of a foundation.

@harishankar: What you're suggesting is quite interesting. They can change the city names to country names - however, Indian stars can play on australian or english team, and ect.

or, they create teams that hold the city names of countries all around the world.

Sounds good.

We can't be fanatical about cricket all year round as we play in Summer only. People will still watch when we play in winter.

Whereas in India, you can play all year round.

cricket is alot more popular in India so I am not sure if Australia can do it better then India
