South African tour of India announced

With the Australian cricket team losing their place as the world's best Test cricket team, South Africa and India have both emerged as potential world beaters.

The South African team has already made a strong case for the number one spot, defeating the Australians on their home turf. The Indians on the other hand, have continued some strong form with a home series win against England and another series win in New Zealand.

A confrontation between these two teams is something that is sure to set tongues wagging, and with the press conference held today with South African cricket board chief executive, Gerald Majola and national coach Mickey Arthur, the confrontation appears looming upon the horizon.

"We are really excited to be touring India. It gives our boys a chance to establish themselves as the clear best team in the world in both forms of the game. It is going to be a challenge, but I am confident we can come home successful," Arthur said.

"The entire team are preparing well for the challenge. The opposition is of course, a tough one. India have been really good recently, but we're at the top of the rankings for a reason."

The announced tour will comprise of four test matches and six one day internationals. A South African squad of twenty will be announced soon in the days leading up to the series.

Gambhir excited at upcoming challenge against South Africa

One of India's most exciting batsman, Gautam Gambhir has fronted the press ahead of the upcoming tour.

"We're really excited to be hosting the South African team. They're probably the best team in the world at the moment and are going to be difficult to beat," Gambhir said. The Indian batsman identified South African captain Graeme Smith and fast bowler Dale Steyn as potential match winners.

"I think their captain is going to be a tough opponent. Smith has been in superb form in test matches and the shorter game and is a captain that leads by example. Dale Steyn is also going to be a tough competitor, he's really been the best fast bowler in the world for the past year and so he will be a tough assignment for our batsmen."

Gambhir rates his own team highly, believing that they can win the four match test series comfortably if they play to their potential.

"If we play at one hundred percent, I can't see any way that the South Africans can beat us. They might be a good team, but we are better. I think we will be the number one team in the world at the end of this series."

This series is set to be a great one, with both teams being full of superstars.

Stay tuned for more on this upcoming battle for supremacy.

Pitch Report

This Eden Gardens pitch will surely help India's spin bowling options of Singh and Mishra. The low hanging clouds could provide some swing for the fast bowlers, and if they can land it in the right areas, the ball may move of the seam.

Both teams will want to bat first if they win the toss, South Africa to deny the Indian spinners the chance to bowl last on this pitch and India to give their spinners a go last.

Batting will be challenging when the pitch begins to wear, so expect some attacking play early on.

South Africa elect to bat

South African captain Graeme Smith has elected to bat after winning the toss. "We want to build an advantage. The pitch looks pretty good to bat on and might crack up later on," Smith said.

Indian captain MS Dhoni was hoping to bat first as well, "We would've liked to have a bat early. It would give Harbhajan and Amit a chance later in the game. We're still pretty confident that we can be successfull, we're just going to have to go with a different plan."

Be sure to check back soon for the first report at the ten over mark.

Nice to see an AC09 story, and also good to see an SA story.

Two strong teams. I think South Africa will struggle without a decent spinner. Don't rate Paul Harris at all.

Look forward to the game mate. Maybe do session updates rather than every 10 overs though. May take an age to finish the match let alone the series if it goes that far.

RSA 39/1 after 10 overs

Khan snares early wicket

The first ten overs of the match had been full of play and misses. Zaheer Khan was moving the ball a mile of the pitch, starting outside Graeme Smith's off stump and seaming it back through the gate. Every time this happened though, the ball would either sail above middle stump or graze past off stump.

At the other end, Ishant Sharma had been giving Neil McKenzie some chin music, which McKenzie was quite comfortable with, looking a lot more solid than his captain.

This meant that when Zaheer Khan gave Neil McKenzie a juicy half volley, a swift cover drive to the boundary was in order. Instead, the ball seamed ever so slightly, finding the edge and landing in the safe hands of Gautam Gambhir at first slip.

Despite the loss of a wicket and some brilliant bowling, the South Africans managed a run rate of 3.90 for the first ten overs.

Graeme Smith 18 (36)
Hashim Amla 0 (0)

Last Wicket:
Neil McKenzie - c. Gambhir b. Khan - 18 (27)

Ishant Sharma 5 - 1 - 19 - 0 - 3.8 RpO - 2nb
Zaheer Khan 5 - 0 - 20 - 1 - 4.0 RpO - 1nb

Thanks for your responses. I didn't think of doing session updates, so I'll give that a go and put in my next update at the lunch break.
