How many do you want? Most channels are just full of repeats anyhow.

The number of channels is basically set by how many digital terrestrial channels you can get in your area. Its basically just Freeview. Although as the old analogue terrestrial signal starts to be switched off there will be room for more. Basically you can't compare it to a subscription satellite service as its a free to air service. Although it does offer you on-demand sport, movies, catch up tv and other programmes via the internet on a pay per view basis.

Harsh? It's quite simple to sort out your problem!

This looks quite good. We already have a freeview box but does this have much extra? I saw that it had the pause, rewind and record 80 hours which sounds useful but what about channels? Is it worth getting over a freeview box?

Doing a little bit of research of the link in the first post will tell you all you need to know to be honest.

I know my mum is cosidering getting BT in, so I might try and push her towards this.

Channel wise, you dont get anything you cant get with a freeview box (as long as your freeview box can handle viewing cards for channels like Setanta).

It does give you the chance to see plenty of delayed transmission Premiership football matches (They aren't shown on sky), Usually available from 10pm. You also get Movies via pay per view (Loads of them), then there are other pay per view things like catchup tv (4 OD etc), Music Videos and the like. Another bonus is the box has 2 tuners so you can record 2 programmes at the same time or record one and watch another, or of course record 2 and watch a pay per view event.

Probably if you aren't a BT subscriber its not a huge carrot to become one, afterall you could go the Sky route as they bundle broadband with TV and I believe cable operators offer similar products. But if you are a BT customer, get it what is there to lose? If you are unhappy with your current ISP then maybe its worth factoring into the decision. I've been a BT customer for ages and without flying the flag for them too much, I've always found their customer support first class and my broadband never has problems.

I have this and it is pretty good. The On-Demand stuff doesn't work for us, because of internal wiring issues (which should be sorted soon!), but as a PVR it's great.

I must say for me, the on-demand stuff is flawless.

I take it you have it plugged into your homehub. Is it connected into port 1 of the homehub? Thats very important. I've read also that some people found they got better performance when using a different router other than the homehub. Obviously you can only try that if you have another router. Are you using the poweline adapters? My router is right by the vbox so I don't use them. They should cope easily, but maybe they are in a reception blackspot, try moving them if you can.

Problem for me is getting 100Kbps speeds from phoneline!

Yes that's right only just better than dial-up. Issue is with the telephone extension that the Home Hub is plugged into. I'll sort it over Christmas, I haven't got the time to do anything at the moment...
