Following the dismissal of Quinton de Kock for nought in the first over of the innings, run scoring proved quite a tedious task for most part as the trio of Chris Green, Pat Cummins and Rashid Khan applied a very effective stranglehold that lasted until Virat Kohli's dismissal in the 39th over for 91. After that Heinrich Klaasen, who had been struggling himself flicked a switch and started middling pretty much everything alongside fellow countryman David Miller, with whom he completed yet another demolition job at the death by adding 123 in just 11.2 overs. Adelaide could manage only four wickets over the course of the entire KKR innings and did themselves no favors with a shoddy display on the field which included no fewer than five dropped chances.

With David Warner and Jonny Bairstow setting a good platform, and later Matthew Wade and Rashid Khan middling the ball quite well, Adelaide needed a very gettable 44 off their final 10 overs to secure third place. That all changed in the 41st over, when Mohammed Shami outfoxed Wade with a brilliantly disguised slower bouncer which the latter gloved to Quinton de Kock's safe gloves to depart for a well played 49 off just 31 balls - by far his best innings at the end of a very lean season. Whatever chances Adelaide had of completing their run chase seemingly vanished with him, as Rashid Khan and Pat Cummins were effectively bogged down by the spin of Krunal Pandya and Akshay Karnewar. Matt Henry came out and swung his bat around which briefly kept their hopes alive, but it was a struggling Mohsin Khan who eventually held his nerve in what was his first game of the competition to bowl KKR to third place.

Champions League XXI
Final

Northern Superchargers vs Southern Rocks at Kensington Oval, Bridgetown, Barbados

Toss:
Southern Rocks won the toss and chose to bowl

So, it all came down to this at the end of the 21st edition of the PC Champions League, a season full of memorable highlights such as the two tied matches - the same number as the 20 seasons previously put together, the Southern Rocks invoking the old Sydney Roosters with their Smith-Williamsn-Kohli top four and posting a record 387 at Texas, Sunrisers Eastern Cape chasing down 350-plus off the final ball, the other Sunrisers from Kandy playing like a complete joke despite Hasaranga's individual brilliance, Virat Kohli batting like Bradman for KKR but worse than Zak Crawley for the Rocks for some reason (which explains why he's being 'rested' for this final), MS Dhoni winning a game as a tail-ender for probably one last time in the Champions League and not to mention Naseem Shah stabbing his own countrymen in the back for literally nothing. And then there's also the history of the team managers involved to be considered - @Aislabie, who until the previous season had one of the least successful records for any CL manager with a record 3 wooden spoons, but now on the verge of a potential second CL title in succession which is something nobody has ever managed to do since the great Fenil. @Aravind. on the other hand, remembered more for his team's heart-breaking 1-run loss in the Champions League XV final - perhaps the closest anyone's ever gotten to a CL title without actually winning it, now presented with an opportunity to right the wrongs from nearly a decade ago. Needless to say, this is a big game for all involved.

Tendai Chisoro got arguably the biggest scalp by removing Harry Brook for only 12. And with that wicket, the Northern Superchargers were beginning to stutter a wee bit.

Sam Curran takes his fifth wicket of the innings

CurranSamipl.webp

While the Northern Superchargers might have been eyeing a total in excess of 300 with Ben Stokes still at the crease, Sam Curran dashed their aspirations in no time by picking four wickets in the space of three overs to end their innings on 271. He finished with a five-fer - his first of the season, thereby releasing all his frustration at being denied a chance to play alongside his brother in the final by the tournament officials. Meanwhile, Regis Chakabva who was plucked out of obscurity by the Rocks for this final having played no competitive cricket since 2023, proudly held aloft five catches behind the stumps in what was a brilliant display of wicket-keeping.

Southern Rocks need 272 to win off 50 overs.

Good & deserving win for KKR.

For Chargers our middle order failing to convert the starts stopped us from getting 300. We have the bowling to defend this, let's see.

39.1 Chisoro to Barnard, no ball, no run, Dropped! Musakanda made a big mess of that simple chance
39.1 Chisoro to Barnard, one run, Dropped! Musakanda made a big mess of that simple chance
43.6 Chisoro to Rashid, FOUR, Who needs Bradman when weve got Adil Rashid
All in all, a gettable target - but we should have restricted them better than we did.

Champions League XXI
Final

Northern Superchargers vs Southern Rocks at Kensington Oval, Bridgetown, Barbados

Toss:
Southern Rocks won the toss and chose to bowl

So, it all came down to this at the end of the 21st edition of the PC Champions League, a season full of memorable highlights such as the two tied matches - the same number as the 20 seasons previously put together, the Southern Rocks invoking the old Sydney Roosters with their Smith-Williamson-Kohli top four and posting a record 387 at Texas, Sunrisers Eastern Cape chasing down 350-plus off the final ball, the other Sunrisers from Kandy playing like a complete joke despite Hasaranga's individual brilliance, Virat Kohli batting like Bradman for KKR but worse than Zak Crawley for the Rocks for some reason (which explains why he's being 'rested' for this final), MS Dhoni winning a game as a tail-ender for probably one last time in the Champions League and not to mention Naseem Shah stabbing his own countrymen in the back for literally nothing. And then there's also the history of the team managers involved to be considered - @Aislabie, who until the previous season had one of the least successful records for any CL manager with a record 3 wooden spoons, but now on the verge of a potential second CL title in succession which is something nobody has ever managed to do since the great @Fenil. @Aravind. on the other hand, remembered more for his team's heart-breaking 1-run loss in the Champions League XV final - perhaps the closest anyone's ever gotten to a CL title without actually winning it, now presented with an opportunity to right the wrongs from nearly a decade ago. Needless to say, this is a big game for all involved.

Sam Curran continued to hit boundaries regularly and brought up a half-century off 43 balls. In between Craig Ervine and Tinashe Kamunhukamwe's ducks and not to mention Tarisai Musakanda's inconsistency, his was by far the most successful experiment thus far for the Rocks up top.

Skipper Ben Stokes' golden arm got the Superchargers the wicket they needed in the form of Steve Smith. As one modern-day batting great departed, another entered in the form of Kane Williamson, who has been second only to Virat Kohli (for KKR) as far as run-scoring consistency is concerned during the competition.

Curran lived by the sword and died by it, being eventually castled by Reece Topley in an attempt to go big once again. He finished with a ballistic 68 off 58 to go with his 5 for 41 with the ball earlier during the Superchargers' innings - making it one of the greatest all-round performances ever seen in a Champions League final. Will it result in victory though only time will tell, but he has certainly put his side firmly in the contest with that effort.

Craig Ervine got bogged down following a positive start and ended up chipping a dolly to Fakhar Zaman at short cover off Trent Boult. The required rate had briefly gotten back to over a run-a-ball as a result of his turgid stay.

And just like that he was gone. No warning whatsoever or anything, a lapse in concentration saw him chip the easiest of catches to Harry Brook at mid-wicket, which got Adil Rashid on the wickets board towards the end of a rather good spell. Rather interestingly, it was Brydon Carse who walked in next rather than the 'specalist' batter Tinashe Kamunhukamwe.

And soon it became apparent why the Rocks' management would trust a nine-ten jack over a well over his head struggling batter with Brydon Carse taking very little time to get going. Southern Rocks needed a very straightforward 61 off their final ten with 6 wickets in hand, and from here it seems only a miracle can save the Superchargers.

Or maybe not. Given the way Carse was going, the Superchargers were never going to change things even with Tinashe Kamunhukamwe's boggled state of mind at the other end. Just 38 needed off 42 now and if Carse keeps connecting this could get over rather quickly..

Regis Duckabva Chakabva busted as the pressure got way too much for someone who hadn't played proper cricket in 2 years and Topley now had his fourth of the match in what was a game-changing spell. From needing just 38 off 42, the Rocks now had a much more difficult task needing 29 off 18 with only 2 wickets remaining of which neither were specialist batters. Way to blow a game.

The Northern Superchargers became the third English franchise overall to win the PC Champions League after Manchester CC (CL III) and Liverpool Lightning (CL VI) and the first to do so in almost a decade and a half. Led by the talismanic Ben Stokes, they completed a dominant campaign winning eight out of nine matches in the tournament with some brilliant performances over the course of the season from Shubman Gill, Harry Brook, Reece Topley and Fakhar Zaman. Stokes despite not being his best with either bat or ball marshaled his troops expertly and occasionally chipped in at crucial moments such as his wicket of Steve Smith in the final. They did not enjoy the best of form from either Stokes or the likes of Adil Rashid, Mitchell Starc and Tom Banton, but a more than handy cameo appearance from Trent Boult in their lineup for the semi-final and final went a long way towards filling those gaps.

The last time the Champions League was hosted in the Americas, it was a Zimbabwean franchise in the Manicaland Bulls who stunned everyone to claim the title in
CL X. History very nearly repeated itself as the Southern Rocks, originating from the same Zimbabwe Premier League very nearly ended up emulating their predecessors but for one bad passage of play that arguably cost them the game after dominating three fourths of the game. They weren't the most consistent side over the course of the tournament, but certainly had their moments due to a prolific batting lineup featuring three of the 'Fab Four' of the 2010s in Steven Smith, Kane Williamson and Virat Kohli which evoked comparisons with the former Sydney Roosters when they posted a CL record 387 at Texas. Who knows what could have happened had Kohli come anywhere close to replicating his world-beating form for KKR or if Tom Curran had been eligible for the final; that last bit certainly hurt them far more with their lower-order being rendered threadbare in his absence.

Despite being on the losing side, there was no player more deserving to be named Player of the Match than Sam Curran whose 5 for 41 followed by a sublime 68 off 58 balls opening the batting in the absence of any other viable options for his team - an all-round performance that ought to go straight into CL folklore. Judging by his expression, he would much rather have had a winners' medal but nevertheless, it is a rare feat to lose a final and still be handed such an honor.

As for the Player of the Tournament, there were quite a few claimants such as Kane Williamson, who scored 578 runs at 82.57 for the Rocks and Virat Kohli, with his Bradman-esque 705 runs at 88.13 for KKR - the second highest tally for a single franchise in a CL season after his own 709 at 118.17 from
CL XI for the Centurion Lions a decade ago. However, a less than ideal return for the Rocks for whom he could aggregate only 165 runs in 7 innings at a Zak Crawley-esque average of 23.57 saw him benched for the final and eventually killed off his chances, along with Williamson somewhat unfortunately. It was Kagiso Rabada who would go on to claim that honor for CL XXI for claiming a staggering 35 wickets overall at just 20.11 apiece, in the process leading not one but two different teams i.e the Southern Rocks and Sunrisers Eastern Cape to the knockouts with his efforts. It still wasn't enough to win him a CL winners' medal, but nevertheless saw him join an elite list featuring the likes of Morne Morkel (44), Dale Steyn (42), Kemar Roach (40) and Mitchell Johnson (37) among bowlers to have aggregated more than 35 wickets in a CL season.

It's been a real pleasure getting one final proper go at running this tournament after having mostly gone through the motions for my other three CLs previously. This one felt different to me, it was fun and I hope you guys had a decent time as well. Also it surprises me beyond belief I was able to finish this in less than 4 months time which must be a personal record for me! :lol

Ah well, I'm way too old for this now. Best of luck to whoever takes this forward! :waving:

OMG I finally won this, after losing two finals. That 1 run lose with Rest of Pakistan Rams still hurts, but this win will surely be a healer. This win is for all my Rams boys & my Haier Cup league manager @Na Maloom Afraad
Thank you @RUDI & @Pinch hitter without Rudi my comeback here after almost 5 years was nearly impossible, thanks a lot for having me back here with my original account. Raghu @Pinch hitter thank you for being the league manager for the Northern Superchargers and running the league in your super busy personal life.
@VC the slogger thanks a lot for running this amazing league again, especially enjoyed your match presentation writing in every match, it was damn good. I hope you'll come back to manage CL again.
Hard luck @ahmedleo414 & @Aislabie but back to back CL finals is not a regular feat to achieve & I hope you'll win this again soon.

SPOILER ALERT* Seriously, if you haven't seen the final result yet, look away now...
YES! The Northern Superchargers won! Massive congrats, @Aravind. You totally earned this... You put together an incredible team and a killer lineup that could take on anyone. I am happy that Northern Superchargers are the second team from my leagues to win the Champions League Title... This is exactly the push I needed to start the Hundred League's second season asap...

@VC the slogger you've done it again... You post matches in such a cool way, I hope to post a League final like you one day...
