Currently who is the best Captain in International Cricket that is still playing?

Jayawardene is the most tactically astute captain around at the moment.

I think the only thing that keeps Ponting down for me is that he captains the best team in the world with the best players at his usage. How would he be captaining if he didn't have these people. So I can't really say Ricky Ponting is the best captain around.
If Shane Warne was captain of Australia, we all know that they'd be practically unbeatable (assuming he acheives the same results he did with Hampshire and Rajasthan)

At the moment, every team feels that they have that chance to win, as they should. With Warne in the fray, I really think that little bit of hope would be gone.

Sad that he had to be axed out of the captaincy due to drugs and sex and whatever other issues occured during his life.

I honestly think it would be amazing to watch him captain an international side in this time. I'm particularly interested in how he would use the powerplays and the 3 appeals per innings

Why even mention someone who isn't A. An International captain and B. Has retired in a thread named "Currently who is the best Captain in International Cricket that is still playing?"

Anyway my vote would go to Jayawardene. Hes the best tactically and leads from te front.

Definitely between Ponting and Jayawardane. I think people under rate Ponting's captaincy skills due to the fact that he's had a stellar team performing for him and getting him positive results.

Some of Ashraful's decision-making has impressed me. A very underrated leader.

Being a shrewd, canny spin bowler, Vettori's tactical credentials were never in doubt. Mahela has also outmanoeuvred many of his opponents.

dhoni has a very bright future in captaining the indian team which he showed in the t20 wc and cb series in aus.........jayawardene is unbeatable at the moment as a captain......i would say ponting is overrated as a captain seeing the results he shows with a outstanding team.......i would also say that kumble could have been a great captain had he was appointed earlier in his career.........

I think that's hugely specious reasoning, because it's not a matter of the captaincy changing between players; it's now about someone who is retired and outside the team. Let's not forget that Australia with Warne and McGrath transcended any captain. The last time Australia lost a Test with both Warne and McGrath was in early 2002. So for the next 5 years, their best side was unbeatable.

Ponting is absolute rubbish. Leads from the front, yes, but isn't creative or innovative and looks lost when his team is losing.

Jayawaradene easily. Tactically good, calm under pressure, leads with the bat.

Smith is awesome too, has a sort of over-my-dead body attitude. If his team needs a heroic performance, he'll go and get it.

Vettori wasn't bad at all either, very quick in changing his fields and such. It helps he is well respected by the other Kiwis, and so they jump when he says jump. He has complete control over the team and the bowlers and uses that well.

I'd mention Kumble too, same attitude as Smith, albeit his skills are waning a little. But he's aggressive, commands respect, decent tactically and knows how to work his bowlers. We suck when batting though, he really should be able to inspire the batsmen.

Gayle worked best for the Windies as he just stood back, and let the players express themselves. I mean, imagine being a fast bowler who has been hit for a few boundaries. Most captains would got an have a word with them, and I know that can be very irritating to some bowlers. Gayle knows that, and so he just sits back, doesn't change the field, and lets them channel their anger into their bowling instead of being in their ear. That was good. He also let the batsmen bat as they wish, and let them feel bad and feel the need to perform after a few failures.

I haven't seen a lot of KP's captaincy this match, sadly. But sending Harmy in at 9 worked pretty well!

Younis Khan would have been a fine skipper for Pakistan, chirpy, active, constantly changing the fields and talking with the bowlers, very encouraging. But he turned down captaincy. Malik has the same problems as Ponting, looks lost under pressure. Although I think he could do a lot better, he seems very smart and confident and knowladgeable about the game normally. Must be low on confidence.

Ashraful is good too. Respected, chirpy, energetic. I don't know if I can call him creative, haven't seen him at test level. He works well though with the ODI bowlers, always keeping energy high. He leads from the front in the field, but needs to score more runs.

Smith *****
Jayawardene ****
Dhoni ***
Ricky Pointing *************
that's my ratings

Well he is underrated because he makes some very good decisions, but he also makes a lots of mistakes especially in the field setting

well its not like he had a really good captain to learn from. Bashar was a good captain but nothing to inspire and really teach Ashraful about the dos and don't s of being a captain. And he was thrown in too early but there wasn't anyone else who could do it better.

Yeah, actually none of the former Bangladeshi captains were good, Habibul is best captain till date for the team so i guess Ashraful has to follow what he used to do, he might just succeed as a captain
