Rain Thwarts Derbyshire
The openers saw out the last over before tea scoring two runs from it and returned to the pitch allong with some light drizzle. Jimmy Ormond managed to bowl out a madien over before the umpires deemed the ever increasing downpour enough to stop play. The covers came off and no play was able to take place for the remainder of the day. The groundsmen will be working hard to get the pitch ready for tomorrow when hopefully the weather will hold up. Typical Derbyshire.....

Derbyshire In Control
Steve Stubbings and Simon Katich have out Derbyshire in a commanding position at the beggining of their innings here at the county ground. After surviving two overs yesterday before the rain came the opening pair came back out and scored at a decent rate. Neither of them really looked troubled at all by the Surrey bowlers who were wayward and punished accordingly. Stubbings made his 50 from 55 balls with 4 crunching fours. Jimmy Ormond gave him width and he punished it by driving him through the covers on two occasions, square cutting him for four once and expertly angling his bat down to third man who didnt get across quick enough. A Good start to the batting by the Derbyshire stalwart.
He eventually gifted his wicket away just 7 runs after reaching his 50 and after facing 65 balls. Jake Dernbach claiming it for his figures but really, Stubbings was to blame. It was the last ball before lunch and all it needed was to be patted back down the track. Stubbings, however, decided to charge down the track and drive the ball uppishly to Mark Butcher in the covers who took a sharp catch to give Surrey a cleam of hope.
This probably wont affect Derbyshire too much as Travis Birt is the next man in. The opening pairing of Stubbings and Katich seemed to work with Stubbings taking on the role of aggressor and Katich the accumilator. At number 3, Birt carries on this trend with his big hitting style. Expect some fireworks after the break!!!
