i have heard of people downloading videos off youtube, is this legal?

Ignoring the fact you are technically downloading them when you are watching them, it is about as legal as having them up there in the first place. As long as you don't try to sell a video off youtube to someone or try to claim ownership of it you are fine legally, so downloading them to watch later is ok.

No. .flv But you can play them using VLC player, or by using Total Video Player. Or just downloaded FLV player:o

It's not that lenghty, plus it's relatively simple. And if you hadn't noticed, there were several other methods stated in that thread for downloading Youtube videos-one of them being copying and pasting the URL of the video to www.keepvid.com, which then gives you a download link for the video. So it's basically about the same as the software you're talking about, but without any softwares.

The files you download from Youtube, Google Video are in .flv format after you download them you can convert them to your favorite format using a converter.
MegaVideo does offer to download the original user submitted files but only if you are a premium member.
