MacGill by a mile out of those two. He has good stats although to be fair, he does tend to play on turning wickets with Warne, with always helps the old stats. He'll do a decent job though.

If macgill is not choosen now it will be a huge mistake,i think hogg is no where near macgill and hogg is 36 ,so no way macgill should be ignored considering he is the best leg spinner in the world.
Age is no issue, MacGill is 36 as well.

Only 16 out of 40 Tests, although you'd be hard pressed to find a properly dusty pitch of the sub-continental style at any major ground in Australia. Sometimes the second spinner's inclusion simply means the pitch is too lifeless to be worth exhausting fast bowlers on.

Sydney normally turns though I think, so I'd guess he's been brought in for just that test in a few series. Obviously he's a good spinner and showed that when Warne was suspended, but I don't think he's quite as close to Warne in ability as people like to make out.

40 Matches 198 Wickets...must be doing something right? Thats World Class still if you ask me.

I would have pick Stuey MacGill :) he has a good test experience and he is also a leg spinner, a perfect replacement fo Warney :)

I would have Macgill.

I am an advocate that someone is rarely going to do much better in Test cricket than FC cricket and Hogg's FC bowling record is poor; with a bowling average of 40.33. Although his batting record is good; I do not feel either his bowling or batting is up to all rounder status; especially for a team as good as Australia who have Symonds and Watson already knocking at that door. His wickets are mainly earned when batsmen try and force the ball in the middle overs and either catch the edge or miss the googly completely, or get the leg in an awkward position, trying to push singles. I don't even think that one can say that Hogg has turned a corner in his bowling either; taking into account his List A stats, his ODI performances have been just what was expected; especially since he is bowling to many batsman who would have only faced him once or twice before.

MacGill on the other hand is proven at test level with an average of 27.20 over 40 test matches. He spins the ball a long way, both ways and Muralitharan has showed how such a tactic can work wonders in Sri Lanka. MacGill is one to take big hauls and I also feel that with a potentially inexperienced pace attack; an experienced operator, capable of ripping lineups apart could be infinately useful.

He's only going to be a short-time replacement, but he should do.
After that, there's always Dan Cullen, Cullen Baily, and of course, Hogg.

I think both can do the job. Though Allan Border has come out saying they (the Australian selectors) shouldn't pick Jaques or MacGill. Mr Border thinks that Hussey should open the batting and Brad Hodge in the middle order. He also thinks that we should go with a four or five man pace attack. I can't find a link to it but if any one can it would be appreciated :D

Judging by the WACA wicket from last week, I think it's highly likely we'll see 4 pace bowlers at some stage in the India series, not that a hard and fast wicket is terrible for leg spin.

However, as Manee says, having an seasoned spinner could provide vital rearguard for a host of raw tearaways. One might expect pace to be more effective against India, but there is going to be a time when you need someone to bowl 30 overs. I would ask the one with 40 Tests' experience and not the one with 7 first class matches in the last 3 years.

I like MacGill. He bowls more loose balls than Warne and doesn't have that aura and ability to get into the batsmans mind, but he is probably the best legspinner in the world and has always performed well for Australia.

True, he does bowl more loose balls. But then next ball he comes in and bowls a beauty that gets you out:p

Maybe they wont even go for MacGill because of age?
They probably will go with one of them but in 2 years time they are going to have to find someone else anyway.
