Chinese automaker, Geely, is making plans for unseating the Tata Nano as the world's cheapest car with their very own hatchback based on the IG concept it showed during the recently-concluded Beijing Motor Show.

With an expected price tag of somewhere in the neighborhood of ?1,800 -$2,700 - the IG would supplant the Nano, which retails for ?2,500 ($3,800) and is currently the world's cheapest car.

In recent times, Tata Nano has been facing many problems where numerous of these cars have been burnt in fire one after the other. And now it seems that the Chinese auto manufacture Geely has thought to take advantage of Nano?s inefficiency and snatch the crown of least-expensive car.

Though, Geely will be a 2 door, 4 seater car with very limited space at the back seats. Unlike Tata Nano which is meant to carry 4 adult passengers comfortably , Geely IG will not seat rear passengers so comfortably.

The car to be launched in China and Russia will include 70 horsepower, 1.0-liter engine and a CVT gearbox. The company has the plans to release the IG car in market by 2012 that will be followed by the launch of its full fledged electric version in Europe and the U.S.

Discuss about the car here.

certainly looks better than the Nano.

tbh the Nano wasn't suitable outside india; as everyone is used to electric windows, mirrors and handling etc.

If it is ?1,800 with the Gullwings then it's probably ?900 for the rest of the car. +1 on looking better than the nano.

cool car. Some day we will have cars for ants and cockroaches.(they will make them so small for the records):p

Nano was a crap material, how people got interested in that.

Still Nano will remain the first " cheapest car" ever and Geely IG the second one as it was launched first.

*In comparison to Nano and Geely IG.*

And I'd like to see its crash testing first. I've seen videos of many Chinese cars (Brilliance) in crash testing, and trust me it wasn't very pretty. All of them failed, most with 0 stars.

China's slowly getting okay on safety, they are releasing some 4-star Chinese cars in Australia soon, and considering some very recent Korean cars are 3 Star, they are reaching the bare minimum now.

You might write Chinese cars off, but remember that we did the same with Japanese and Korean cars.

That makes no sense. Before the Nano came along there was another car that was the world's cheapest car, perhaps they made the mark a bit lower than previously, but being the 'cheapest car' is about what's the current cheapest new car, not that some company made a cheap car that was at some point the cheapest.

The first car ever made for commercial sale was the cheapest, mate.

Get your facts straight, if you're going to talk ████ like this.

Jesus Jake, are you on your period or something? All you are doing is whining about some irrelevant fact and then complaining because it can't reach 220km/h or something. God you go off on some irrelevant ████ sometimes.

No, I don't.

I can't see a reason to buy this.

Why would you buy a car? Because it's fun and exciting? This car isn't.

Because it's safe? This car (probably) isn't.

Because it's comfortable to move your family around in? This isn't.

Apart from being made by people getting paid in peanuts, to be ridiculously cheap, there's nothing good about this car.

Also, how can you convert horsepower to kilowatts, as it's easier to measure against other cars using it?

To drive to work? To use as transport? What else do you buy a car for... wait, apart from hooning... :facepalm
