Strauss and Compton tons give Middlesex control
County Championship - Middlesex v Glamorgan
2nd April, 2009

After winning the toss and electing to bat, Middlesex were off to a brilliant start making their way to 0/50 with easy. Soon after, Croft struck, removing Morgan for 21.

Morgan c Cosgrove b Croft 21 (57)

Next over, Harrison removed Dexter, and the match had swung to Glamorgan's favour in the space of 2 overs.

Dexter lbw Harrison 0 (9)

Strauss and Compton started to put on a partnership, and by lunch, both were on 39, and making a good partnership, both eying half centuries and going beyond to a big score.

Lunch
Middlesex 2/103
Strauss 39*
Compton 39*
Croft 9-4-27-1

Powell continued spinners Croft and Dalrymple after the break, and as both batsmen powered past 50, Glamorgan needed a change. Harris was brought back into the attack, with Kruger from the other end. Changes were made again, but nothing seemed to be working. Compton was nearing his century, Strauss slowing down to anchor the innings. Compton raced past his century, before he went for one big shot to many, and Dalrymple had him caught by wicketkeeper Wallace.

Compton c Wallace b Dalrymple 111 (130)

Nash and Strauss made it to tea easily, Strauss nearing his century, Nash trying to play himself in, and follow on from the good platform set.

Tea
Middlesex 3/241
Strauss 95*
Nash 7*
Dalrymple 11-1-43-1

Harris and Dalrymple started after the break, having a big impact, second ball of the session Harris removing Nash for 7, trying to swipe across the line to a ball full and on the stumps.

Nash lbw Harris 7 (15)

Harris came off next over, so he could rest up ready for the new ball, bringing Croft into the attack. Strauss passed his century, and kept working the ball around. Finally, it was time for the new ball. Harris and Kruger took it gleefully, hoping to remove the devastating Malan, and Kruger successfully achieved that, removing him with a good length ball when he attempted to go inside out over cover, only leading to an edge to the keeper, which Wallace snapped up easily.

Malan c Wallace b Kruger 70 (53)

Strauss was past 150 quickly, and Powell was getting frustrated that nothing he tried worked. After 13 overs of the openers, he turned to Harrison and Croft, in hope of getting some wickets before stumps. It was unsuccessful, as Middlesex passed 400 just before the close of play.

Stumps day 1
Middlesex 5/408

Wow, you're getting whipped! You better hope they 'deccy' (;)) or you're stuffed. They only need to lead by 150 to follow on, you better try and play for the draw ;)

Rees and Powell knock off 113 of 545
County Championship - Middlesex v Glamorgan
3rd April, 2009

After finishing the previous day with Middlesex well on top, and Strauss eyeing a double century, Glamorgan needed to come out firing early in the morning, and they decided to bring back Harris and Kruger, which was successful, as Kruger struck early in the day, taking Strauss 20 short of his double century.

Strauss c & b Kruger 180 (319)

With the main man now gone, Kruger struck again, taking Udal out for a handy 15, caught behind by Wallace, taking a solid catch.

Udal c Wallace b Kruger 15 (23)

Glamorgan took this opportunity to bring on the spin/pace combination, so brought on Croft and Harris immediately, looking to get some quick lower order wickets. Harrison had a caught behind and LBW turned down, before finally getting his man, Silverwood, out LBW.

Silverwood lbw Harrison 14 (34)

More plays and misses and LBW shouts followed, before Harrison was simply too warn out to bowl another over, and with only 4 minutes left until the break, Dalrymple came on to finish off.

Lunch
Middlesex 8/498
Godleman 49*
Richardson 18*
Kruger 28-1-100-3

Powell continued spinners Croft and Dalrymple after the break, having many, many chances at both LBW and caught behind, umpire turning all of them down. Dalrymple finally got the breakthrough, the umpire finally raising his finger, and Richardson had to go for a scratchy 27.

Richardson lbw Dalrymple 27 (53)

Finally, Croft captured the last wicket, after abut a million more LBW and caught behind shouts, Godleman dismissed for 76, Evans finishing 7 not out.

Godleman c Rees b Croft 76 (223)

The Glamorgan opening batsmen came out, following a first innings of 545, the first milestone to survive to tea. They did just that, surviving to tea, 0/18 at the tea break, both batsmen in 7*.

Tea
Rees 7*
Powell 7*
Richardson 4-0-6-0

The next goal, survive the night, was successful as well, as they scored reasonably quickly and set themselves up for a good 3rd day in their first innings, ending the night on 0/113.

Stumps day 2
Glamorgan 0/113
Rees 55*
Powell 45*
Strauss 1-0-1-0

Rees and Cosgrove tons save Glamorgan
County Championship - Middlesex v Glamorgan
4th April, 2009

Rees and Powell resumed day 3 0/113, still a mammoth 423 in deficit to Essex's first innings. The pressure was on to bat well, and bat to draw, and the pressure got even higher, as Powell fell for 48, only adding 3 to his overnight score.

Powell lbw Richardson 48 (126)

Rees however, relished the challenge, and at 24 years of age, brought up his 6th FC ton, with a 4, his 12th in the innings. Now he has to knuckle down and go big, with Cosgrove at the other end, this was the partnership the Middlesex bowlers had to break.

Lunch
Rees 117*
Cosgrove 37*
Richardson 19-3-50-1

After a close LBW decision, to a ball just pitching outleg except hitting leg stump, Rees continued his innings until 123, when Richardson grabbed his, and the teams, second wicket of the innings.

Rees c Dexter b Richardson 123 (267)

Dalrymple and Cosgrove started a partnership, and just when starting to look solid, Dalrymple departed for a handy 36, failing to go on with a start, the most frustrating thing for a coach.

Dalrymple lbw Evans 36 (65)

Maynard spend the 15 minutes before tea cautiously, getting his eye in for the planned assult after, heading back where he came from with a solid 7* next to his name, with big targets ahead.

Tea
Glamorgan 3/318
Cosgrove 81*
Maynard 7*
Richardson 27-4-71-2

After the break, Cosgrove dabbled around, taking a long time to get scoring, but after 51 minutes, he raised his bat for a 213 ball ton, now needing to do what Rees couldn't, and make a big one.

Typically, he couldn't wait the extra 38 minutes until stumps to get into the pies, so decided to get bowled, playing all round a ball on leg stump, giving Richardson a wicket instead of a boundary, departing for 116.

Cosgrove b Silverwood 116 (244)

Maynard and Wright farted around until stumps, in an almost unbeatable (but unwinnable) position, at 4/414.

Stumps day 3
Glamorgan 4/414
Maynard 37*
Wright 14*
Richardson 35-4-98-2

Just innings scorecards now, lads.

Maynard stars with First FC century, drawn game
County Championship - Middlesex v Glamorgan
5th April, 2009

Glamorgan were off to a poor start, losing Wright for 18, only adding 4 to his overnight score of 14.

Wright lbw Silverwood 18 (58)

Wallace didn't stay in the middle or long, after cracking 3 fours, he tried to go one too many, and mistimed it off the toe of the bat, popping back softly to bowler Evans, for a soft caught and bowled.

Wallace c & b Evans 19 (29)

Soon after, Harris went too, adding just 1 to the total, and now it was almost certain Glamorgan would have to take to the field at some point today, something their players didn't look to happy about.

Harris c Morgan b Udal 1 (8)

Croft and Maynard, on the other hand, had different ideas. Croft looked comfortable at the crease, and Maynard as comfortable as ever, as they powered towards the lunch break.

Lunch
Glamorgan 7/525
Maynard 81*
Croft 26*
Richardson 44-8-114-2

After the break, they continued on, unphased by the new ball or anything. Maynard completed his first First Class century, a well constructed innings, while Croft powered past his 50.

Croft soon went for a brilliant 65, a classy innings, coming in at number 9, that the team might need later on in the season to save them.

Croft lbw Udal 65 (114)

Harrison came and went, first ball, clean bowled, trying to work a ball from off stump onto the leg side. Glamorgan were definitely going to bowl now, unless there was some last wicket record partnership.

Harrison b Evans 0 (1)

Kruger also followed the next ball, for a first ball duck, giving Evans his fourth wicket, as Glamorgan were all out for 599, Maynard finishing with a super 114 not out.

Kruger c Dexter b Evans 0 (1)

Glamorgan had just over a session to give their bowlers a run through, and find some form. Middlesex's openers Morgan and Strauss negotiated the 6 overs to tea successfully, looking like this.

Tea day 4
Middlesex 0/33
Strauss 12*
Morgan 7*
Harris 3-0-9-0

Kruger struck, removing Morgan after the break, catching him LBW when he tried to play a full length ball pre-mediated off the back foot.

Morgan lbw Kruger 8 (30)

Strauss and Dexter used it as a chance to get some batting practice, and batted out the remainder of the session with ease.

Stumps day 4
Middlesex 1/127
Dexter 63*
Strauss 52*
Kruger 10-1-52-1

The pitch was an absolute road.

Great game of cricket there. Was always up for grabs, surprised it ended in a draw.

Top stuff mate.
