Anyone got any good playing tips and hints for C2004 apart from field settings?
This could be made a sticky for newcomers who want tips and help

yeah i have some this applies to test matches in Hard mode. If you are chasing a huge total and have enough time but you are afraid of losing wickets then play sensibly. dont use the six hit button it is only an alternative if you dont have time. But if you have time ignore the six hit button.make sure that you defend all balls in line with the stumps and those which you dont know what to hit. try to hit all those balls that are out side the stumps and you know which to hit. if you are afraid that you might get caught after hitting a shot then leave the ball or defend. dont risk it you have time.
P.S. because of this strategy i have a first wicket partnership of 195 in hard mode. and also i made a score of 460/3 in which all five batsmen have a half-century and two have century while one of the century making batsman remained not out.

I find in hard mode I really have to restrict the shots I play early on. No backfoot driving as that always seems to give edges. No square cuts and not hooking or pulling. I start to play more shots once I get in.
With some weaker players I won't play anything on the off-side as the chances of getting an edge is too high. I got Ian Bell to 100 playing entirely on the leg side, tried to play the very next ball through the covers and edged slip. (All this is with Ravi AI on hard)

I play tests in hard mode using one of Tutsi's patches.

The thing to emphasise, as the guys have mentioned above, is patience. Don't worry if you get bogged down. More often than not, when I use the 6-hit button after getting frustrated, I get out through bad timing.

Also, different batsmen play better against different bowlers. A LH batter playing on the off-side to a RH bowler over the wicket is very risky. Even early on with a RH batsman, I find I can cut and hook successfully to a RH bowler over the wicket. To a round the wicket bowler however - no dice. So I try and leave these alone.

Pitch types affect my shot selection too. Try and get a feel of the bounce and pace of the pitch before attempting attacking shots. I have played 2 matches on hard pitches, and when I played my next game - on a normal pitch, I could not play anything - the pace and bounce were different. After a while I adapted.

I find bowling using this patch harder than I used to. Field settings are important here. Bowling at different lengths for different pitches and weather conditions. I find bowling tight with a medium pacer can often slow the batsmen down and they will sometimes try a silly shot.

If I think of anything else, I will edit the post later.

Test Match: Now for bowling. Vary your line and length dont always bowl aimed at the stumps try some outside also. these lead to edges. introduce fast bowlers first. then change the worst one of them to a spinner or swinger. The after wards change the fast bowler to a spinner.then when the batsman gets used to spin introduce fast. this confuses the batsman and is effective to low down the scores. dont continue a bowler for a long time continuously stop him then bring him back later. sont use a bowler according to his name but according to how he is performing in the match you are playing. try putting slow balls in between if you are fast and googly or flipper or arm ball if you are a spinner. make sure that you use your best bowlers for tailenders as they do not bat well. you might get edges if you are fast and LBw or catch if you are spin. hope this helps.

i have a one stupid tip but may be useful as if you facing fast try the front foot shot and place it on leg side you have a good chance of taking two or threeand you usually dont get edge and you can try this on spin too and swing and maye get four if fielder not there and fielder usually are dumb over there. I do this some time if there is a talender and u need like 65 in last hour or 35 in 9 overs.
note be care full on spin if u missed it u might get out and u can use 6 hit button some times on that if there is a spin bowler. and beware of spin you might can get stump

I like to pitch in one- In ODI's if youre openers are still out there go aggresively amd come down the track to the spinner(s).
For timing the second the bowler releases the ball from his hand or the power bar stops(for none sams.exe players) got down the track with the 6 hit button. Do it ONLY WHEN BALL IS PITCHED UP/YORKER OR FULLTOSS ON THE STUMPS, NOT ANYWHERE ELSE. If u do there is a high chance of a stumping.

Avoid in tests unless it is a yorker/fulltoss and u don't want to get your batsmen to get out AVOID IT AT ALL COST.

Also dont worry with run rates in test. Only hit balls that should be hit and avoid balls outside off stump until your batsmen has 20-30 odd runs, unless the off side isn't packed as it always is.

Now, in team selections always choose at least one all rounder, NOT:
*5 Bats, 1 Wkt/Bat, 5 Bowl
*6 Bats, 1 Wkt/Bat, 4 Bowl
Rather try:
*5 Bats, 1 Wkt, 4 Bowl, 1 All-Rounder
Cause four bowlers aren't enough, the CPU gets used to them and it becomes harder and harder to get them out- unless you are good, but then again you wouldn't be reading this thread then.
Bowl Pacers in short spells of 4-6 overs for the first 20, and Medium bowlers long spells between 15-30 cause they are more effective then.

I play tests in hard mode using one of Tutsi's patches and i like to play all my shots along the ground. i only use the 6 hit button in odis. but i still score at a rate of abt 4-5. i wud say learn how to time the ball on hard mode and then you can play all your shots comfortably and get allot of runs, i do this for bouncy wickets and ones that dont do anything. on grenn wickets you have to be careful and bat time, you can often get out when defending coz you get an edge so leave all the balls out side off unless they are there to be hit. and if your batters fail on a green wicket you can always bowl the other team out cheaply. on turing tracks put a mixture of left and rite hande batsmen as it is easier to face the ball turing in and it wil make the bowler less effective. on damp wickets dont play into the offside to much as the bounce is unreliable, play into the legside alot. and dont play to many shots. with spinners onm damp wickets if you can find the rite length where the batter things it wil bounce twice before him but it dusnt and you get him lbw you can get a wicket ever ball

Pitched up balls on the leg stump, Slog Sweep is a great shot, you basically never get caught, use it againt any type of bowler!

if u have tail-enders...in ODI's, you can play the yorker quite easily. power button, come front foot..and hit it straight, itll go for a six. For bowlers, in Tests..try to bowl within the line, keep varying ur ball. I tried this using some patches...try bowling a bouncer on the leg, coming in and have fielders around you. Any mistimed hook can be caught.
