Irish stars fetch huge money in Pool One!

The star Irish players in Pool One have fetched huge money in this first round of bidding, with some teams dropping as much as half of their million-euro budget on two or three of the top local talent. This could have huge ramifications as the auction continues.

Mixed fortunes for overseas batting hopefuls

A talented pool of overseas batters has finally been completed, and it has been a pool of deeply mixed fortunes for the players involved. Unbelievably, George Munsey was one of four unsold batters in the pool, while Derry were prepared to drop almost 40% of their budget on just two players. What a time to be alive.

Dublin hoard keepers as budgets get thin

Pool Three certainly was an interesting pool. Comprising mostly of the second-string of Irish batters and keepers, who could have seen Neil Rock coming as the highest earner from this pool? It was the culmination of what appeared to be a concerted strategy from Dublin to hoard as many Irish keeper-batters as they could. It will certainly be interesting to see the ripples from that approach, as at least two counties look as if they will have to find their first-choice gloveman in the unpredictable Pool Eight.

Cork, Down splash cash as Thomas handed suspension

There was a moment of genuinely shocking drama in Pool Four of the auction, as West Indian Devon Thomas found himself subjected to an ICC suspension during his own auction. Bidding on him was correspondingly suspended while Cricket Ireland spooled through their filofax to find a relative like-for-like replacement. In the end they found Steven Taylor, who was one of three players to sell to Down County Cricket Club from this pool.

Bargains everywhere as Fingal fill up on all-rounders

No fewer than five local all-rounders will play for Fingal this year, after Gareth Delany, Jeremy Lawlor, Ruhan Pretorius and Stuart Thompson all join George Dockrell at the east coast club. Perhaps the biggest bargain of the entire round went to Antrim though: the South African-born son of the former Irish coach Graham boasts a List A batting average of 60.50 and strike rate of 113.61. Despite this, Antrim's bid of €20,000 proved to be a winning one as no other team showed any interest.

Bowlers sell cheaply in quiet auction pool

Only one overseas bowler sold for more than €50,000 in a very quiet pool of bidding; as a result there's very little to report other than how pleased Dublin will be to have the competition's fastest bowler in their ranks. Lots of bargains here, and now the teams have only six overseas slots between them to be filled in Pool 8.

Irish spinners out of fashion as three go unsold

No fewer than three Irish bowlers have gone unsold in the most recent round of bidding, two of whom are all-format Irish internationals in 2023. The unsold players are Jack Carson, Matt Humphreys and Ben White, who had to look on from afar while their seam-bowling peers fetched salaries of up to €52,000. Not all the spinners went unsold though: young left-armer Michael Frost found himself in possession of a spot in the Derry squad. Antrim also got their hands on a couple of otherwise overlooked Irish internationals, while Matt Dunn got the price he needed to make the switch from Surrey to Cork.
