Most batters in the Deathwalkers' XI were happy to nudge the ball around for ones and twos and maintain a strike rate in the 70s, but not Victor Trumper. The greatest of cricket's 'Golden Age' had one last bit of brilliance to show before bowing out of the competition, which he did with a stunning knock of 80 off just 58 balls against a completely stacked pace bowling lineup featuring Mitchell Starc, Vinctent van der Bijl, Trent Boult, Allan Donald and Shane Watson, that too at the most pace-friendly venue in the world perhaps. He lived by the sword and died by it, falling on 80 after charging out to attack Starc as he had done throughout his innings and it cost him a century in the end.

Trumper proved to be the difference in the end, as the Pitch Burners fell short by a 12-run margin despite a couple of good knocks by Andy Flower and Michael Bevan. The latter who was known for taking games deep eventually ran out of partners as a result of Joel Garner running through the lineup to claim figures of 4 for 39 off his 10 overs. It was his second four-wicket haul on the trot after taking 4 for 37 in his previous game, and one simply wonders how far his team might have gone had he managed to hit a similar rhythm at the very start of the competition rather than the end.
