An article which shows Aussie viewers are becomingly more uninterested in watching the cricket. I think it is an embarassment to channel nine and australian cricket in general. I don't blame people as well, watching aussies always winning is boring and uninteresting.

M*A*S*H bowls over Aussies

AUSTRALIA'S summer of cricket has slumped to embarrassing depths with the second Test against the West Indies being beaten in television ratings by 10 programs, including the classic sitcom M*A*S*H.

In a damning statement of the growing disenchantment with Australia's crushing dominance, more Sydney viewers preferred to watch archaic replays of Hawkeye and Hot Lips Houlihan than Ricky Ponting's men pulverising the woeful West Indies.

Other shows to out-rate the cricket in 15-minute timeslots included Murder She Wrote, Deal Or No Deal, Good Morning Australia, Always Greener, Sydney Weekender, Ready Steady Cook, and Seven and Ten news.

Even Reba, an afternoon comedy show featuring American country and western singer Reba McEntire, attracted more interest than the lopsided second Test in Hobart.

Incredibly, the shows registered more viewers during the opening two days, when the Test was still competitive.

While the Hobart Test recovered to win 78 per cent of the 135 measured timeslots over five days, the data provided by official ratings watchdog OzTam suggests viewers are crying out for a good old-fashioned cricket scrap.

Former Test spearhead Len Pascoe echoed the sentiments of many when said he was fed up with Australia's lack of competition.

"I think the Ashes was such a great series that we're now experiencing a hangover," he said.

"I must admit I can't be drawn to watch this third Test. I watched about 10 minutes of the first day.

"We're not getting a 50-50 contest and I think a lot of viewers, like myself, are becoming frustrated.
"I want to see the Windies perform. I want to see them get in and fight.

"There's so much cricket in our faces these days. People are getting tired of it - and the lack of competition isn't helping."

While the Hobart clash easily won the weekend ratings, peaking at 324,000 Sydney viewers at 5.15pm on Sunday, the interest dipped on weekdays.

On day one on Thursday, the Test lost the 10am-11am slot to Bert Newton's Good Morning Australia and Seven's Morning News.

By the end of the day, M*A*S*H reigned supreme, attracting 162,000 Sydney viewers - 12,000 more than the Test.

On day two, noon screenings of M*A*S*H and Murder She Wrote won again, tallying a combined 133,000 viewers.

In the same timeslot, the Australia v Windies clash attracted a paltry 60,000 viewers.

Channel 9 ratings chief Jamie Campbell did not return calls to The Sunday Telegraph.

But Cricket Australia spokesman Peter Young said he had no concern over a potential ratings crisis.

"Usually we wait until the end of the summer to make a judgment but for 30 years cricket has been No1 in the ratings and I'm sure that will continue," he said.

Thats a shocker. Looks like the Ausssie public is sick of Aus beating teams so easily. Bit surprising not more were tuned in as WI aren't Zimbabwe. They do have Lara that should attract people. If the English were hear it would be a different story. Hopefully things improve when SA get here.

Trouble is people don't believe the touring teams can beat Australia, they don't care if the game turns out to be closer than they thought it would be. Same problem with Pakistan last year and who would be surprised if the South Africans get similar treatment?
