Make 2 Equally strong Test teams using player from past 15 yrs

Hussey was good, very good but if I have to make any changes in the 2nd lineup, I would have Younis or Yousuf for Tests and Virat Kohli (replacing Sachin) for ODIs. Just check the records and you will see for yourself what good the first two have done.

Only talking about tests here. I'd also like to see your line-up without using the constraints other than the given ones, cause most of us are likely to have the same XI.:thumbs

Other two questionable/interesting selections would be Matt Prior over AB De Villiers ( a genuine keeper now) and Shane Bond ( 18 test matches, out of which only 8 played after 2005 which represent half of his total career wickets)

Just a general comment on the trend of selection. Interestingly enough I think that some players have been overlooked by almost everyone. Atapattu has a great record. His avg is low cos he had a horror start, but did score big runs later on and has 6 double centuries. Chanderpaul is another. Also the younger Waugh brother also springs to mind as a notable omission from all teams. Damien Martyn who was a big part of the Invincible Aussie Team. Also Andy Flower, played for absolute minnows and yet averages over 50. I also thought that Inzamam would find place in more teams than he has so far. Towards the end of his batting career he had transformed into a one man army. Also perhaps VVS Laxman anyone. In bowling I think most of the teams have more common names and I don't think too many big names are being missed out, except perhaps Jason Gillespie. Waqar could also have found place in more teams.

Yes, I will try and do that later in the day.

I have selected Prior because I feel at one point he could have made to the England team having KP, Cook, Trott and Bell only on his batting. Furthermore, you may like to call AB as a genuine keeper but you know that when a guy like Tsolekile is in a strong South African side, it is because AB is not that comfortable keeping wickets. That said, I admit I missed AB in the 2nd lineup as a specialist ODI batsman. Bond might have not played too many test matches but he did extremely well in all the formats of the game he played during their period. He kind of had an aura with him like Walsh or Ambrose still did at the twilight of their careers.

Take out 3-4 names and in you go. All of them in my 14-15 men squad! But when it comes to the playing XI, it'll be hard to drop anyone from the XI ! Not overlooked, but the greats of the game outweigh their names.

I don't think they have been overlooked. It's just that in quest of getting the best possible line-up, some had to be given preference over others. If there was a provision to put 2 players in each slot, I'm sure a lot of those omitted players will get a look in.

It was very difficult to leave out Ponting, but I consider Dravid to be a marginally better No.3 than Ponting. If these teams were ODI-based, then without a shadow of a doubt I'd have gone with Ponting.

Just an FYI, between 1/01/00 & 31/12/07 (the exact date range for your first side), there was no better form batsman in the world than Ponting. If ratings are your thing, he held the number 1 ranking in test batting for an unbroken 14 months, a record. Furthermore, these years were his prime, scoring 7423 runs at an average of 64.54, with 27 tons. He was utterly dominant throughout this period, and thus it's no suprise that the highest run scorer in both ODI's and Tests during the 2000's was, Ricky Ponting.

Furthermore, during this period, Dravid scored 417 runs less at an average 6.64 less with 9 less tons from 2 more matches. predominantly on tracks favouring batting.

Add to that Ponting was played against South Africa, India and England several times apiece, and it really does become a phenomenal achievement. So I think you've made a squiff call there tbch.

Moreover Samuels, Tsolekile is in the squad for the sole reason due to the political labyrinth which a rainbow nation like South Africa has imposed upon CSA. He will not play, he's not good enough to play and it's well known.

Prior ahead of AB?
Bond ahead of Steyn?
....Dubious.
Cook? Pieterson? Hmmm I'm guessing you're a devout English fan, so it'll slide! Sehwag and Pup seem like far, far better selections.

Another fyi, Sehwag's best years came in 2008-2010, so he's a far better pick for the latter team.

Yeah overlooked was a wrong word, I meant 'not picked' :D

I didn't dig that deep before making a selection. If we go by the above stats, then yes, Ponting should have been the obvious choice.

The reason I believe Dravid was better no.3 than Ponting was that Dravid had to face a much better attack than Ponting. 2000 to 2005 was the era when Australia dominated world cricket. Their bowling line up was excellent.

Ponting, on the other hand, at most had to deal with SA's attack (probably the second best in the world [tied with Pakistan maybe]). England's and India's bowling was no where near threatening during that period.
