Melbourne celebrates 150 Years

It's one of the oldest clubs in the competition. 150 Years in the AFL, Melbourne will be celebrating the 2008 Season. Although the 2008 looks tough for the Demons. A lot of off field drama has set the club back from the good old club it use to be. Sacked coach, CEO, President and a lot of the board members all being sacked, theres been a huge clean out at Melbourne.
Lets have a look at the changes that have happened over the Pre Season break....

Coach: Neale Danihar - Garry Lyon
President: Jim Stynes

and the recent sacking of Paul McNamee's was a huge suprise for the Demons fans, as McNamee was only in the job for 3 months before being sacked.

The Story behind Paul McNamee
Sacked Melbourne chief executive Paul McNamee knew he was on borrowed time when Jim Stynes took over as chairman of the AFL club.
McNamee, a former tennis star and high-profile sports administrator, confirmed yesterday he had been dumped by Stynes and his new board, less than four months after he was appointed, in April.
The man he initially beat for the job, Geelong's chief operating officer Stuart Fox, is now seen as the frontrunner to replace him.
Outgoing Fremantle chief executive Cameron Schwab, who previously held administrative roles at Melbourne, is also a contender, although Stynes said the selection process would be wide open.
McNamee said the writing had been on the wall since Stynes replaced Paul Gardner as chairman of the ailing club last month.
''I think there was probably a disconnect from the moment the new team came in,'' McNamee said.
''I think they had a certain direction and it seems that was at odds as far as I was concerned.
''At the end of the day, they're the board, they get to choose, so it's disappointing.''
Stynes, while not a board member at the time, was part of a panel which helped select McNamee.
But he admitted yesterday he was unhappy at being cut out of the final part of that process, when the choice was made between McNamee and Fox. However, he denied that experience played a part in him sacking McNamee.
Asked whether he would have preferred Fox to have been given the job initially, Stynes said he had not been given enough time with the two candidates to make that call.
''My recommendation at that point was it needed another thorough [interview] because it was more of a verbal chat about where they saw our club and .
Fox had been seen as a likely successor to Cats chief executive Brian Cook, before Cook signed a new three-year deal last week, rejecting an offer to head up the new Gold Coast franchise.
The decision to sack McNamee is a costly one for the Demons, who were already on track for a loss of more than $2 million this year, which would blow out their debt to nearly $5 million.
The Demons are contractually obliged to give the departing chief executive a payout of about $115,000.
But Stynes said his board should not be held responsible for the wasteful exercise, as it did not appoint him.
''It was the old board,'' Stynes said.
''When you come in, you have to look at every part of the business and we've spent the past five weeks since we came in looking at every part of the business and we've come up with this decision.''
While Stynes declined to detail the reasons for McNamee's sacking, he said his lack of a football background was one of a range of factors taken into account.
The fact that Stynes himself, a former club great, could fill the role of a front man to boost the club's marketing efforts, part of McNamee's initial appeal, also played a part.
Stynes's decision has him under pressure to make the next appointment a good one McNamee's successor will be the club's seventh chief executive in 12 years amid a wretched season, which has yielded only two wins.

Hawks demolish Dees

hawvdeesrg6.jpg

A Spectacular Hawthorn side has sounded the ominous warning to the rest of the AFL, thrashing Melbourne by 76 points in its round one clash at the MCG

The Hawks won 17.13 (115) to 5.9 (39)

Rick Ladson kicked four goals for the winners, who had four other multiple goal kickers, and 8 goal kickers overall. Brad Sewell had 36 possesions.

For the Demons, they only had single goal kickers for the afternoon as they showed they haven't got the tall option up forward. Brad Miller was missing through injury, while David Neitz is most likely going to announce his retierment in the next couple of weeks. McLean, Jones, Sylvia, Moloney and Davey were the only goal kickers for the Dees.

Hawthorn exploded out of the gate after the first bounce kicking 7 goals in the first term. They settled down a little in the 2nd term only kicking a goal, while the Demons kicked their first of the match through Aaron Davey 9 minutes into the 2nd quarter.

It was a highly fierce match, with the Demons knowing they couldn't win the match, so they decided to bring back the famous 80's with a good old fashion brawl. 9 Players were picked out of the brawl by the umpiers and will face the tribunal on tuesday night, but all are expecting fines from the AFL. It was a good old fashion brawl, so all things weren't "great" for the Hawks on the day.

Dees fight well against Premiership favourites.

vsdogsoa6.jpg

After getting smashed last week, Melbourne was again up against a genuine Premiership contender in the Western Bulldogs. The Dogs last week defeated Adelaide comfortably with superstar Brad Johnson playing his 300th AFL Match.

So the Demons who were smashed by 76 points, had to really show something this week against another quality oposition. They did that. Even though they only kicked 6 goals for the match, they kept the Bulldogs to a very low score, which made the game a tight one. Both teams missed their oppourtunties infront of goal. But if the Dogs were more accurate in front of goal, they would have sealed a very comfortable win.

The Dogs started off well kicking 3 goals in the opening term, while the wayward Dees could only manage 5 behinds to the scoreboard. A lot of set shots from the Dees, but all misssing the target, something Garry Lyon needs to practice at training i would believe. The Dees fought back well from there kicking 3 goals in the 2nd term, but the Dogs also added 2.2 for the term which gave them a 15 point lead at the major break.
This is probably where the match was lost for the Demons, it was the 3rd quarter. The Demons could only manage 2 behinds for the term while the Bulldogs added 3 goals. The Demons tried to hit back in the last quarter kicking 3 goals, but it was all but over for the Dees, and yet another loss for the season.

Aaron Davey was the only multiple goal scorer for Melbourne booting 2, whilst playing a lot more game time in the midfield. And i was impressed with Cale Morton's game today, played really well and kicked his first goal, well done to the young fella.
