When Michael Vaughan came to Australia along with the rest of the English team for the 2002/03 Ashes series, he had no pressure on his shoulders, and was a free exciting batsman. He was targeted by McGrath, but that didnt phase him. He was player of the series, with over 600 runs. So what has happened.

I believe it is becoming captain. For some people, it has had a positive effect. I think Vaughan is one of those who the captaincy has had a negative effect on their cricket. He is averaging 36.55 as captain compared to 44.14 without the captaincy. Add on to that the ODI side captaincy and the fact he does not have an ODI hundred under his belt and you have a guy under some serious pressure.

So, how should it be fixed. How can England fix Michael Vaughans woes. well for a start, they can make Trescothick, Nasser Hussain's former deputy and the man that I belive should have been captain in the first place after Husain's retirement, the captain of the team.

What do you think?

Similar thing happened to Ricky Ponting, although not in such a drastic way. Ponting took a while to pass 100 in either Test or ODI cricket when he became Australian Captain.

I put it down to the extra mental energy spent in devising tactics, media, team meetings etc. It can suck a lot of players dry - when it comes to pay day they have very little in reserve.

Ponting had a kind of unlucky year, it wasn't really a form slump. There was that slightly amusing 98 at the WACA and he was generally making good starts and getting out. He hurt his finger at the Champions' Trophy and that set him back a bit. There were calls for Ponting to be dropped back in 97-99, I think. His form wasn't too bad for a rookie (back then he batted at six).

Vaughan on the other hand has been out of it for about two and a half years now. Hard to say if he just fluked a year or has lost whatever was going right.

there was also a death in the Ponting family during his first months as capitane

I don't know when Ponting became captain, but I do know this year in the first months he was hitting fifties and centuries after each other. So being a captain isn't that bad for him.
Today he had a good fifty too with his 61. But I read that it was a loose wicket. He got out too easy.

loose, sweepy swat at giles, popped a top edge to vaughan at backward square leg. dominantly brought up his 50 with a 12 run over.

he became captain when waugh retired, after the indian tour of australia, in 2004. the thing i forgot and what probably most of us have forgotten is that he was already captain of the odi team for ages. this might be a good way to blood your test captain, see if he knows how to play one dayers alright, then go the next step.
