Well well well, I was one of the 15% of people to have the infamous Red Ring of Death happen to them. Last night I was playing my 360 in bed after seeing the missus off (yes!), and put in the game I rented for $7 earlier in the afternoon - PES2008 to be exact. Anyways, Im playing the game, it wasn't to great to be honest, and out of no where my game freezes. I just think its a scratched disc from the video shop, so I give it a wipe and throw it back in. Then I turned on my 360 and no lights at the front turned on and no picture showed on the screen. Then after about 30 seconds.... Them fukn 3 red lights came on and I started swearing my head off. I look online for fixes but they all seem dodgy so I didn't bother trying them. I txt my missus saying something terribles happened, and when she finds out all I get is a txt back saying "Haha, ah well, means you can spend more time with me. ". Not what I needed to hear. So anyways, I read online that you need to send it all the way to Microsoft in America to get it repaired/replaced. But I didn't want to do that, so I just took it back to Dick Smith Electrical with my receipt hoping they would just swap it with a new one. But now they are going to send it away for repairs somewhere (2-4 friggin weeks), the technicians who know nothing about 360s are going to look at it and go - so will they just ring me up saying grab a new one? Or will they make me wait another 2-4 weeks by sending the console to Microsoft?

So now I'm bored, and perfect timing, just on the Friday. Now I can't get double XP points on COD4 online.

What procedure did you do to get your Red Ring of Death sorted?

Sympathies to you about the Mrs, indeed it promises to be a few weeks of pain.

At least you have a pc, could be worse.

The RRoD happened to me a year or so ago. I simply rang Microsoft and they sent me back an email with a form to send the Xbox away (which was all free mind you)

Anyway, they where extremely quick, i think it was around 4-5 days that i got it back :) And its been working perfectly ever since, no freezes:D

15% get the RROD, make it 55% and you'll be closer to the truth. I personally don't know anyone who's not had a 360 fail on them. The new models are far better than the olds though, my new one barely freezes, think it's frozen twice since Feburary, which is pretty good going tbh.

Whoever told you you have to send the console to Microsoft America is retarded. You can send it to the factory in this country, and they'll either fix it or send you a replacement, and you'll have a fixed console within a week. Send it off to MS, the only way you'll get it fixed.

When it happened to me I was watching Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire at the time. I have had an Elite since then and it is great. No problems. *touch wood*.

Thing is, if its broken, within warrenty and hasn't been tampered with Microsoft will either fix it or replace it.

Obviously its tough for a guy to wait 2-4 weeks for his pride and joy :p And i feel for you...but thats the price you pay for getting an Xbox 360. Its far superior to the PS3 as far as online capabilities go.

I've had 3 new consoles since March 07.

I know someone who had it a few times, got fed up and returned it to GAME for a PS3. ;)

According to one tech I've spoken to, RRoD is simply overheating caused by a lack of thermal adhesive between the CPU and its heatsink. Although Microsoft have a good warranty and return program for the Xbox360, a modded unit can easily be repaired by someone with a knowledge of hardware.

There's one home remedy that involves wrapping the unit in towels and leaving it running for a while. This simply blows the thermal diode so that the unit will continue to run at dangerous temperatures. However, the CPU will continue to overheat; heat not only reduces the life expectancy of the silicon (and in this case almost certainly voids the warranty), but anyone who has dabbled in overclocking knows that an overheated chip produces errors and becomes unstable. The RRoD is effectively protecting you from this situation.

oh......my.....GOD. I got the RRod death for the THIRD GOD DAMN TIME today. Unfortunately i bought my **** box during the period when they had 61% failure rate, which is ridiculous. They have claimed that the newer Xboxes have all been fixed. SO GIVE ME A NEW ONE THEN SO I DONT HAVE TO KEEP SENDING MINE BACK!!!

And my three year warranty ends in June, so if it happens again I'm stuffed!

Well the new Jasper ones are the most stable ones, seeing as they're based fully on 65nm fabrication. Those buying new ones can find them but I doubt they would give you a new one. They'll probably just give you some one else's sent 360 after fixing it.

But the thing is, its happened three times now, and I'm quite sure it will happen again when my warranty expires. To me that is horrible customer service, and alot of people are in the same situation. Microsofts going to suffer out of all this really bad when the next generation consoles come out. People will just give them the finger and buy a PS4.

Yeah that is indeed an issue. Reason why MS isn't bothered because most people just don't care and buy a new console to get rid of the bother of sending it again and again. All the while when they should infact shout at MS and do something about it. MS SOLD broken Xbox's, I mean not broken but they knew about the problem before selling them, so they must permanently fix it. People don't buy 360's to wait for a month to play their games.
