Middlesex captain Ed Smith has retired from first-class cricket after failing to recover from a serious ankle injury.

The 31-year-old missed most of last season with the problem, and handed over the Middlesex captaincy to Shaun Udal at the end of the campaign.

Smith, who spent two years in the role, said: "It's been a real honour to captain Middlesex."

Sad to hear, I like Ed Smith. He always seemed like a genuinely nice bloke, and he had a pretty impressive career as well. Only got 3 Test caps, but made 12,789 runs in 191 first-class matches, scoring 34 hundreds and averaging 41.79. That's an impressive career by anyone's standards, and I'm sure he'll be sorely missed at Middlesex.

Never forgiven for for the T20 Cup. All the players did autographs after a game except for him. Nah, only joking, great player that will be sorely missed.

An average of 42 in 191 matches, is a might impressive record for somebody who played in England. Just a shame, he couldn't do more at International level, but still, great career nevertheless.
