Who is the better bowler?

Take into consideration the ammount of world-class batsman that each bowler has dismissed. Here is the list of batsman that each bowler has dismissed that average's over 45 in Test Match Cricket.

Dale Steyn:

Virender Sehwag (3)
Rahul Dravid
Shivnarine Chanderpaul
Younis Khan
Inzamam ul-Haq
Mahela Jayawardena
Mohammad Yousuf

Mohammad Asif:

Graeme Smith (3)
Jacques Kallis (2)
Mahela Jayawardena (2)
Kumar Sangakkara (2)
Rahul Dravid
Virender Sehwag
Sachin Tendulkar
Kevin Pietersen

Steyn may have slightly better statistics but Asif has dismissed more world-class batsman then Steyn and has played half the ammount of matches that Steyn has. Also, Kevin Pietersen has absolutely destroyed Dale Steyn whilst Mohammad Asif constantly got Pietersen out without Pietersen scoring any runs off of him.

Steyn is much better.

Steyn is clearly not 100% fit at the moment anyway.

Asif is a Drug taking Cheat and is overrated.

Steyn..Simple...He's clean.

So are we starting on bowlers now then?

Good thread, was waiting for you to start it, tbh. ODIs is Asif, by far, but Tests is slightly more interesting.

Mohammad Asif has dismissed better batsman than Steyn, and is far better against left handers, no question about that. However, I believe that Steyn > Asif to an extent that such an intricate detail needs not be explored. If you filter out Bangladesh, Asif's average of 23.13 trumps Steyn's 23.67. On the other hand, Steyn's strike rate of 38.7 far trumps Asif's 45.7. One is an economical spearhead and the other is a wicket taker and I feel that Steyn does his job slightly better than Asif does his. Furthermore, Steyn has succeeded in every country he has played in to have as good strike rate, with the exception of England and this being due to him being far too raw for international cricket at the time. Asif, being a seam bowler, has shown an inability on flat pitches, with an average of 42.30 and strike rate of 81.1 in Pakistan.

So, Asif in ODIs, Steyn in Tests.

I'll put it more simply for you Manee;

Asif is a dirty little drug taking weed.

Dale Steyn is a wonderful young bowler who's clean of any illegal substances.

Mohammad Asif against South Africa in South Africa was the finest displaying of seam bowling I have ever seen and he was comprehensively dismissing world-class batsman. The man brought Sachin Tendulkar to his knees, come on people!

I'm a great fan of both bowlers, Asif has shown greater dominance at one period of time but Steyn has shown greater consistancy against weaker competition.

Valid points Ben, but Asif's a dirty cheat.

Dwain Chambers was a fine athlete but the moment he stedded himself up immediately disregarded him as a proper sportsman.

Still there was a time when Asif was unguessable for all World class Batsman.
I still remember How Did he beat Sachin in 6 consecutive deliveries and trust me that not a easy job to do.
Same extent I think Styen is a bit Consistent as Ben has mentioned but If you talk about High class one day bowling then Asif >> Styen.where by current situation Styen of course going to have longer and better career than Asif.

Tendulkar brought himself to his knees trying to reach the low bounce!

manee added 0 Minutes and 45 Seconds later...

How is my analysis not simple?

You can't compare the 2 as far as their bowling is concerned.

Both have different roles - one is a bowler who relies on his speed to get wickets, the other relies on seam and swing.

I would still rather have Mohammad Asif in my side over Dale Steyn, if I was to choose between the 2.

Mohammad Asif is more likely to get you the important men in the opposition (The Laras, Pontings, Pietersen, Tendulkar, Sehwag, you get what I mean), while Steyn will get the nobodies out (Vaughan and Ambrose for instance)

And Matt - I don't remember us comparing their drug usage, so I don't think your comments really have a place in this thread.

Valid point zMario and I do agree with you somewhat. If Asif wasn't a stedhead i'd take him over Steyn anyday as Asif was a wonderful bowler who could genuinley have become one of the best ever. However, he turned into a filthy cheat so that does have some contribution to the argument.
