I was thinking considering the ICC are so reluctant for an ODI championship like the test one, and it would kinda be pointless as we have a world cup, all odis for the four year period should be tallied and a ladder built up then have the world cup as a sort of finals.

This would be my structure:

It would all be knock out format.

So the top 14 teams in the world would be seeded.

and the match ups would be as follows

1 v 14
2 v 13
3 v 12
4 v 11
5 v 10
6 v 9
7 v 8

then the 7 winners progress to the quarter finals.

Then you have a play off round.
then the 6 highest seeded losers play each other

8 v 13
9 v 12
10 v 11
then the two lowest seeded winners play again

9 v 10

and the winner plays 8

8 v 9

the winner then progresses to the quarter finals the play off round consists of 5 matches. so you could do that in 3-5 days if you wished.

then the quarter finals

1 v 8
2 v 7
3 v 6
4 v 5

then
1 v 4
2 v 3

this gives teams an incentive to win series and matches thoughout the 4 year period. as it gives them a favourable seeding position. and it gives the minnows a chance to play some games and get noticed but without having a huge chuck of time taken up by dead rubbers.

this world cup format would have 19 matches. it could be over in 3 weeks easy and will be exciting.

This would be how I'd do the T20 World Cup. With a few tweaks of course because I think that first round is messy.

Either put 16 teams in to make it a true knockout, or give the top 2 ranked teams a ticket straight into the quarters, leaving 12 teams to fight for the last 6 spots. Having a playoff round featuring most of the crappier teams that have already lost wouldn't be particularly compelling viewing, nor would it have much of an effect on the tournament when only one of those teams gets to stay alive - and for their reward they get to play the #1 ranked team. Better to remove that part altogether I say.

yeah i agree, however my reasoning was to give the minnows some tv exposure which could boost cricket in those countries a lot.

Knockout? Doubt anyone will want to risk not playing each other and this would potential revenue if say England didn't face Australia.

You don't appear to have addressed issues of home and away. The top seeded team play all their matches at home?!?!?

Stick to formula1, man

this is the format for the world cup. because I recognise that having a seperate final for the odi championship would be impractical. So over the four years the teams play each other and then this is the structure of the world cup rewarding the teams who played well throughout the four years with a favourable draw.

Sounds quite interesting.ICC should make a championship like this instead of the ICC Champions Trophy.
