Before I start, I want to say that I was very excited to hear about this patch and what things have been changed in it. These are the things that really matter when it comes to gameplay, unlike team kits, etc and I am glad that we have the information available to us now to edit the important aspects of the game, which the Cool Game Play patch is an attempt at. You might notice the majority of my review says that certain areas are not quite right, but I think it is now a matter of tuning the patch as it has been said it is a BETA. This is a good first attempt that covers groundbreaking work in crucial areas, and so congratulations to Boss for making it. This review is to point to where I feel this patch can be made realistic and better.
I installed this patch and ended up uninstalling it bit by bit. First the captures, then the strokes, as I found these sections not realistic enough (and my run rate was easily too high with the ball always speeding to the boundary)... until I had only fielding positions and CPU pacing files still installed. With these settings I played a full 50 over game (as described below).
BOWLING
---------
-I didn't notice too much difference in bowling with fast bowlers but I found the off-cutter bowl did not work as it should and tended to go in the opposite direction.
-I haven't had a good go at bowling spin yet, but from what I did bowl it seemed okay.
BOWLING SPEEDS
-----------------
In real life:
-no bowler can bowl 163km/h
-only 2 can go over 156km/h (Aktar, Lee)
I think fast bowlers should bowl up to 155km/h to give a more accurate representation of real lifes majority of fast bowlers (also those faster speeds are quite difficult to play). I think that med-fast bowlers should be able to bowl no faster than 140km/h - as anything over that is called a fast bowler.
CAPTURES
----------
-no captures should be replaced - EAs ones are fine, I refer to the square drive or cut which has been replaced needlessly by some other shot, and looks seriously wrong.
FIELD POSITIONS
----------------
-The fielding positions were good positions, but from one to another they did not vary enough to give variety, ie normal were all pretty much the same, and open and defensive were mostly the same as the other ones. There was not a defensive field that would give adequate cover on the boundary against big hitters in the late overs.
-The spinners did not get a different choice of fielding positions than the fast bowlers, as they normally do and should.
STROKES
--------
-power stroke to third man is great idea, I got caught out by one of these - very realistic.
I didn't play the strokes part of the patch very long because some of the strokes were quite odd - they tended to go in the exact opposite direction from what they were supposed to. Some work is needed here.
PITCHES
--------
-The hard, normal, and green, and therefore I assume dusty also, were too bouncy and when fast bowlers bowled bouncers they went flying for four in no time. These need to be decreased. The normal pitch is as bouncy as real life as it comes with the game. The damp pitch seemed to have the correct amount of bounce. I didn't try the wet, dusty, or dry pitches, but the damp should be quite slow and the wet even slower.
-It is good to see the fast outfield on a hard pitch. However, the outfield is too fast, and also the normal, green, and damp outfields should be slowed slightly.
CPU Pacing
----------
Well, I played a full 50 over match on Normal as NZ v West Indies and got 277/8. In reply WI were scoring 8/over until restrictions came off and then they were scoring at a slightly fast 6, considering the wickets were falling. At 120/5 odd they were in a position where they should really start being carefull considering they were ahead of the required RR of 5.1 per over. But as one batter was out and the next came in, they remained as aggressive, if not more so. They ended up all out for 177 off 30 overs. Only 4 overs before hand I was looking at a beating with WI at the half way mark with more than half the required runs. Bond took 3 wickets with yorkers in one over - as fast bowlers do to the lower order.
Conclusion: dispite the majority of this patch pointing to improvments, I think this style of patch is really the way to play the game and just needs, input, testing and tweaking by members of the C2k2 playing community.
