RR: Pakistan have started very well here this morning with some excellent bowling from the opening pair. However, South Africa have mounted some kind of fightback through Kallis and Kemp.
LK: Yes well Pakistan did start very well. A couple of decent overs from Shoaib Akhtar were backed up by Ali Asad, however, surprisingly, it was Asad who got the first breakthrough.
RR: Both opening bowlers continued to dominate the South Africa batsman and put them under increasing pressure, it wasn't long before South Africa had slipped into a perilous position, losing both Jaarsveld, and captain, Smith
LK: With South Africa now in deep trouble, could Kallis and Gibbs rescue the team, or would Akhtar and Asad continue to dominate. Well, Akhtar produced another brilliant ball to dismiss Gibbs and already South Africa looked like underperforming
RR: Fortunately for SA, Justin Kemp sticked with Kallis through to lunch, seeing off the remainder of the openers spells and the start of Saqlain Mushtaq's test return. However, can they continue this excellent fightback after lunch, only time will tell?
Brilliant bowling by the Pakistanis. However, a partnership is developing. Pakistan need to get another wicket before this partnership goes to far. Great presentation Rhys. Great story
SOUTH AFRICA 189/7 (Kemp 56, Kallis 40, Akhtar 3/63)
RR: So hello and welcome to the tea break on the first day of this remarkable first test, and who would have thought that Pakistan would be doing so well with the inexperienced outfit that is playing right now. They have been dominant in both sessions, playing some excellent cricket, bowling amazingly and fielding really well! Of course, this position has been set up by the excellent work in the morning session, however, it has been thoroughly driven home after tea.
LK: Very true there Rameez. Pakistan are well on top here right now and should be looking to knock the tail over after tea. So, how did South Africa fall in to such a perilous position - well, almost straight after lunch, Kallis lost his wicket to none other than returning spinner, Saqlain Mushtaq!
LK: Then Kemp and Pollock started to build a small but required partnership as South Africa tried to rebuild again. However, as soon as Kemp had crossed 50 and was looking on to bigger things, another beauty from Mushtaq removed him and it looked as if the end was nigh for South Africa.
RR: Yes indeed! The lower order/tail were now in and surely Pakistan would soon wrap them up. Even better for the home side was when they managed to remove the last dangerman, Shaun Pollock, just before the tea break.
RR: Surely Pakistan will destroy the remaining batsmen after tea and start to build there own innings this evening. Join us at the close of play today for the next roundup!
