Is overrated. I know he is rated by every man and his dog, but he is actually very overrated. I like him, but I reckon when he gets found out, he won't be the player everyone has hyped him up to be.

That said, he could average 100 until he retires.

^Wait till Ben sees your post.

King Cricket added 1 Minutes and 38 Seconds later...

According to him, Hughes >>> Sunil Mohan Gavaskar....and he slams people for rating Sehwag over Hayden :rolleyes:

Hughes is overrated in my opinion. Seems unsure on short balls and hasn't impressed me by his play against spin but, big but, he did play extremely well in the last test match and is good enough to suceed at this level.

Made his debut against the team that has just beaten Australia in Australia for the 1st time in 20 years; replacing one of the alltime greatest openers; facing the best bowling attack in world cricket in arguably the most difficult conditions in world cricket for top-order batsman; and he comes out and absolutely annilates it all. Couldn't of done any better and couldn't of had a harder first up task in International cricket. His been the difference between Australia and South Africa during this series. Many great batsman averaging over 50 in their peak couldn't of done in their peak what Hughes has acchieved in this series and Hughes is only 20 years old. And his "overrated"?

Sure, it's alright to have ago at him if he starts failing against quality bowling but he hasn't. He has conquered quality & swing & swing bowling at high pace, under difficult circumstances. You can't possibly criticise him or label him 'overrated'.

He hasn't had chance to fail yet he's only played 3 matches you can't possible hype him up so much on the back of a few performances.

This massively hyped bowling attack have allowed Mitchell Johnson to average 83 against them, with a fifty (that was a 98* as well) and a hundred. Maybe they're not so strong after all? Either that or Johnson's got the potential to be better than Hayden as well? :p

too early to judge, overrated by some (ben) and rated a good batsman by others. should be a interesting year for him, huge pressure in the ashes.

Some of you guys talk too much very early! It's really crap when it's said, the youngsters has achieved many years cricketer's record history as soon as they perform brightly in their debut. Not realizing that these noobs have just stepped into first step of long ladder. They are still left on the learning curve.

This is how, in other thread one of the chaps was saying that Warner was the future star and praised some blah blah on his head.. That player had not even played 10 matches in fact.. Not only for Aussie player.. Even for some of the Indian players same hypes come. Raina was rated next Tendulkar..

===> Whenever a young noob (whether in debut or after some matches ) attains a peak level, he is next Lara or next Sachin or next Ponting! But if the same noob strikes the purple patch, who needs him in playing XI .. Lets get rid of him from the team. Mind changes so soon you know. :p It just makes no sense. Give the player a long run.. Let that player play against all types of quality teams with quality opponents in various pitch conditions and in various pressure situation. If he maintains the consistency, obviously he would rise up to the top.

Just to remind Ben, Virender Sehwag a year ago scored a triple against more or less the same South African bowling attack, the best attack of the world ATM according to him- that in 280 balls, the fastest triple. Faster than your Hayden. And when it comes to Sehwag he becomes over-rated even after scoring the fastest triple against the world's most lethal bowling attack, but when it comes to Hughes who has so far scored just two hundreds against that same attack -he becomes absolutely fine, greater than SM Gavaskar, equal to Sachin. May I know the reason Ben? Another thing I will remind Ben, Gavaskar had 4 centuries with an average of 100+ against the mighty West Indians in his debut series. That without wearing an helmet or anything- against arguably the most lethal bowling attack of alltime.

Hughes has done it on bowler friendly tracks. Sehwag's triple came on an awfully flat pitch in India's first innings, and he wasn't facing a class spinner either. Was a good innings that showed incredible attacking flair, but the pitch was so much easier to bat on than the ones in South Africa.

434 was'nt chased down in 50 overs at Chennai. It was in the so called "bowler-friendly" RSA pitches mate. RSA also has batting pitches. So, its absurd to generalise RSA pitches as being bowler friendly.

I think Paul Harris who bowled to Sehwag in 2008 and Paul Harris who bowled to Hughes some days ago are the same guy?

Still got to play a few more games yet before he is in the overrated class. Everyone thought they had Sehwag, Martyn, Chanderpaul etc technique figured out but all of them went on to have successful careers and 2 of them are still going.

He will not be as good as he could be. Look at Alastair Cook, got 200 against Australia, everyone thought he was going to be amazing, but got found out.
