Welcome to the second edition of Planetcricket Talk Cricket, a review of the first day of the second Test at Lords.
22:15:38
Manee
Welcome Lee.
22:16:03
Skater
Hello again. Great day of lounging around watching the cricket. 16/07/2009
22:16:38
Manee
Yep, good day's cricket. The Ashes atmosphere really can never be matched.
22:16:50
Skater
And that's a FACT!
22:17:52
Manee
Well, I'm biased having grown up watching Gough and Caddick ply their trade against the Waugh brothers, Taylor and co.
22:18:09
Manee
As well as Mcgrath and Warne take out Atherton, Hussain, Stewart et al, time and time again.
22:18:43
Skater
That never happened... I remember us smashing the convicts 5-0, series after series...
22:19:11
Manee
PTSD, look it up

22:19:48
Manee
Anywhoo, on to the first day's play at Lords. First impressions?
22:20:08
Skater
I'm disappointed, frankly.
This was a chance for us to say to the Australians 'hey, we have set down the gauntlet, deal with us' - and we blew it.
22:21:32
Manee
After Johnson's bout of the yips and seeing the sheer flatness of the pitch, I thought England were set to score 600 and kill the game for the Australians there and then.
On the topic of the pitch, I think it is disappointing that an attack of 90mph bowlers can be dealt with so comfortably and with so much time. The wickets which fell were largely due to losses in concentration or subtle swing whereas the bowlers deserved some bite out of the deck.
22:23:05
Skater
Is the era of the pitch dead? Literally? Is it going to be a surprise to see a pitch that has something in it in future?
22:25:07
Manee
Yes. Australia's pace bowlers have good actions are strong and fit, they deserve some assistance for their efforts. It is sad for cricket. The game is evenly poised but it must be said that England must feel disappointed to have lost so many wickets. 16/07/2009
22:25:36
Skater
2 or 3 max, it should have been.
Strauss has come up with his own captain's innings, Cook played well, Bopara and Prior have weaknesses, Collingwood threw his wicket away and Flintoff showed us all why he is retiring.
22:27:09
Manee
Prior got a peach, to be fair.
Speaking of Prior's dismissal, let's talk Johnson...what happened?!
Was it a bout of the yips?
22:29:13
Skater
Nerves.
Lord's is an incredible place, I was taken aback when I went there and I was only visiting, imagine playing there for the first time! 16/07/2009
22:30:24
Manee
Lords is an amazing ground, been there on a tour and played in the indoor arena. That being said, I don't understand how an arena can take someone aback.
He was not following through straight in his early spells and that is a key issue for any bowler's accuracy.
22:35:13
Skater
Will he be better at Edgbaston, do you think?
22:35:41
Manee
I feel he will remain strong to right handers throughout the series, but whether he can sort out his problems to left handers, I'm not sure.
As a fellow left arm over the wicket bowler, bowling to left handers and right handers are completely different ball games.
He was not that strong to left handers in South Africa. Duminy plundered several runs and he didn't so much get Smith out as break his hand.
22:36:50
Skater
Talking of hand injuries - Hauritz. Ouch.
22:37:31
Manee
Yeah, didn't look pretty. Is a shame, won't be surprised if his series is over.
22:37:44
Skater
Well it isn't broken and he was fielding at the end
22:37:56
Manee
It'll be sore tomorrow once the adrenaline and ice wears off.
But good news for the Aussies that the finger is not broken, he might be necessary when they push for victory on the fifth day
.
22:39:56
Skater
It'll be an England win on the fourth, don't worry.
22:40:06
Manee
We'll see.
Hilfy bowled well. Got good swing to the right hander, used some good plans and was accurate to the left hander, keeping up at 90mph throughout. What were your impressions of Hilfy before the series, the English media didn't seem to know much about him, we're you the same?
22:41:36
Skater
I saw him in South Africa. I didn't think he would be Australia's best bowler so far.
22:42:11
Manee
Certainly got more pace and a better length than in South Africa.
Not dropping short nearly as often.
Contrary to everyone else in the series, Siddle has pretty much matched the predictions of the British press. He has been aggressive and hostile. In my opinion, he is two bowlers rolled up into one. He is a bog standard third seamer most of the time, but when he is fired up, he cranks it up and becomes the accurate, relentless attacking option who was all over Collingwood.
22:45:13
Skater
Siddle has been very good, but I couldn't listen to the man talk for long. 'Yeah, no, yeah, no'...
22:46:12
Manee
Can't look at him for too long either, or perhaps I'm being rude.
Ok, we'll wrap things off now. Predictions for the second day.
22:47:44
Skater
Rain.
22:47:59
Manee
Third day?
22:49:08
Skater
England to be bowled out around 450 and Australia 4 down by stumps.
22:49:24
Manee
4 down for how many? About 200?
22:49:32
Skater
Something like that.
22:50:26
Manee
Yeh, sounds about right. I can see England taking a few early wickets. On that optimistic note, we'll end the second edition of Planetcricket Talk Cricket. Goodbye.
I have recieved a few PMs from Australian members about Planetcricket Talk Ashes Cricket. If you can give availability times in British Summer Time or Greenwich Mean Time, it would be greatly appreciated.
