Problem with Field Editor

Help! D/L the field editor last night and tinkered with some fields. I went back into a saved game I had been playing. Bowling with fast bowlers and everything appeared to be fine - I could select the fields I wanted and all changes appeared to be present and correct. However, as soon as I brought the off spinner on and tried to enter the field settings from the menu to change the field, the game froze.

After a reboot, I went back to the field editor. When I tried to enter two of the off spinner fields (Attack 1 and Retreat 1 - this is a test match btw), it would not display the fields, instead there was a two word error message, something like target error? (unfortunately, I thought I'd written it down but I can't find it. It was something like this).

However, once you click on OK, you can still edit the field and having re saved them, the message did not appear again but, having tried the game again, its still freezing as before.

Any ideas (apart from reinstalling the game!)?

I have had serious problems with the game freezing for a long time now,i have learnt to put up with it,the cpu decent seem to like you playing with the config editors too much, when you save some new config it seems to take offence not all the time but sometimes,i have upgraded my cpu and reinstalled, when i did my virus checker warned me not to install??? anyhow has only frozen a couple of times since,so i believe the game or program has something wrong in it ,maybe on purpose trying to stop people changing things!!!! Conspiracy theory

You might be right about the conspiracy theory Potter. Are we paranoid or realists?

Anyway, I evenutally got bored trying to figure this out and just reinstalled, however, as soon as I started fiddling with the off spinner test fields again, the same problem reoccured.

I edited one or two fields using the field editor then tried to open Retreat 1 and was greeted with the error message which is: Type Mismatch (which is what I was getting yesterday). Lo and behold, when I try and enter the field selection in the game and it freezes again.

I don't know whether this is related or not but its relevant to you guys who've developed the field editor: It appears that the field.txt list may be incorrect. When I opened three of the off spinner test fields using the field editor, they just didn't look how they should (eg. an aggressive field with fielders on the boundary etc). It looks like the standard 3 field should in fact be Aggressive 3, likewise the Aggressive 3 should be Defend 2 and Defend 2 should be, yep, you've got it, Standard 3. Changed these numbers around in the field.txt file and everything starts to look how it should. Does the field.txt file need amending? Could this be the cause of the error message and subsequent freezing?

In the meantime, I think I'll have to go back to manual editing of the off spinner fields using the cfg. editor.

Does the game freezes if you change the fields through the config editor

Hi Prakash. No, its been fine. In fact, I've never had any problems with the game before in terms of it freezing other than when it won't stop raining. You got any ideas?

Is it possible for you to put those off spinners field settings here

hi prakash,

i also encounter the same prob of what sparky spec here. After re-install the aggressive 1 field for offie the prob is gone. Is there any solun to get rid of this annoying bug?

Yep. Do you want me to post the configs (which I can do) or screenshots (which will be technically difficult for me!). I'll have to do it over the weekend some time.

Are you thinking that I might have broken one of the golden rules like positioning more than 2 men behind square or similar? Is there a limit (from the computer's point of view - I know there isn't in real life) to the number of men you can have outside the circle in the test fields?

Like Boss, I've managed to get around the problem by reinstalling the off spinner fields from the original gob, copying them using the cfg. editor.

The weird thing on the last example I posted was that I hadn't even touched the Retreat 1 field.

Another thing I perhaps should have mentioned is that I'm still on Windows 98. Given that most folk don't have antique operating systems, could this be a possible source of the problem - missing a driver or something?

I was asking about the field config files. I tried to change the off spin field but it havent freezed for me...

prakash i have a problem with the player editor when click to run your wonderfull player editor nothing appears why is that prakash?

Hi prakash,

i figure out where the problem is..., i.e. the data in these files,

(1) aggressive 3
(2) defend 2
(3) standard 3

are stored differently(the file bit size also different whenever we try to edit), the important factor is on the top of these files (when view with config editor), the headers also different (in general these are ID BEGIN 99999, but for these files, they are SE, LSE..some thing like that!). so when we edit these files using u'r field editor the headers for the files are changed into default one. so there is the pbm occur like "file not found"..., Is there anyway to overcome this prakash?, that'll be greatful....

Thanks Prakash.

I tried editing the off spin test fields again at the weekend using the config editor and the same thing (game freezing as before) happened.

When I opened the configs, I noticed that a couple of the fields had bits chopped out of them. In one, only half the settings for the first fielder appeared, the rest appeared at the bottom of the file after the 'END'.

In the other, one player was missing altogether!

I thought I could reinsert the missing data and it would be sorted but this didn't seem to work. Sorry, I should have kept copies of the screwed up files and posted them here... oh well, hopefully the new txt file will be the answer to these problems.

I'll try the revised txt file and let you know whether that makes any difference.

Great stuff. Used the new txt file last night and it appears to have worked fine. Cheers Prakash!
