Did anyone see the first of the new episodes on Dave last night? I thought the first 30 mins was excruciatingly painful (the scene where Lister reads Jane Austen to Kochanski's grave especially) and the usual "Rimmer is a self-centred coward" thing seemed more contrived than usual.
That said it showed some potential towards the end and the reviews all say that it gets much better after the first installment (couldn't get much worse). Not really any surprise that they ignored all the continuity and issues from series 8 (as they've done before at the start of new series) but at least a meta-nod to it would have been nice.
Fair to say that all looked 10 years older - especially Chris Barrie who really looked awful :p
Just hope tomorrow's is massively better.

I wasn't a big fan of the last series (big fan of earlier series) so wasn't bothered that it didn't follow on, mostly because I don't remember the last series as I only watched it the once. Didn't think much of this either, it seems they ran out of witty one-liners years ago and the break hasn't refreshed them at all.

I was very disappointed by last nights episode was hardly any laughs and it just didn't feel the same.

Hopefully tonights will be better as I love Red Dwarf one of the best comedies ever in my opinion.

A couple of chuckle moments. Awful storyline, the acting seemed poor too.

That wasn't Red Dwarf, that was a drama. The jokes just seemed, too obvious, if you get what I mean?

I understand ye, such as when Rimmer started listening to music couldn't hear them being attacked, it was so very obvious what was going to happen. It was all too laboured.

There was the odd funny moment though such as Cat's pink suit, that made me chuckle a bit.

It was terrible but I would have been incredibly surprised if it managed to be half decent.

Shame as on the whole it is one of my favourite shows. The scenes in the polymorph episodes where Rimmer has lost his anger Lister his fear, The cat his vanity and Kryton his guilt are amongst my favourite scenes of comedy.

I'll watch the rest though.

Give Quiche A Chance! :p

I think Quarantine is my favourite episode

So, let me get this straight. You want to fly on a magic carpet to see the King of the Potato People and plead with him for your freedom, and you're telling me you are completely sane?! I think that warrants 2 hours of W.O.O.

Queeg rates up there too!

Gunmen of the Apocolapse is probably my favourite. I laugh constantly throughout especially when they put Krytens eyes on their chins pose upside down and pretend to be an alien race to fool some rouge simlulants :p

I've got them all and GOTA never fails to make me laugh. Used to love Better than life too - looks quite dated now but still an awesome episode.

Well they're having fun breaking the 4th wall and dropping heavy hints about series 9 but it feels more like 30 minutes of self-congratulatory masturbation by Doug Naylor than Red Dwarf.

Oh dear, Oh Dear, Oh Dear

Well at least we know one thing for sure, no matter how bad TV programmes get in the future they can never suck as much as this. I'm off to find a drill to do some DIY brain surgery to see if I can erase the memory of this tripe.

This is sadly terrible. They've basically taken the plot to The League of Gentlemen the film and made a poor job of it. Its not very funny at all to be honest. :(

Agreed. My thought about half way through was "they aren't going meta, they are producing self-indulgent tripe"
