Here's the story: Nielsen to take leave ahead of Champions Trophy | Cricket News | England v Australia 2009 | Cricinfo.com

This seems ridiculous to me. No one has even proven to me that we NEED coaches, let alone that they are overworked and need to be rested. I certainly understand how a coach can be useful don't get me wrong, but surely captaining a team would be a FAR harder job. Nielsen could plan everything he needs to as the players play/practice. I can't see how he could put in so many hours that he needs to rest. Oh well, maybe it just shows that he's working hard and I should be praising him instead.

But most of my brain is telling me, if Nielsen can't be away from his family for too long, why the hell did he go for the job?? And if it's not Nielsen pushing for this break but Cricket Australia, what does it say about the importance of this ODI series? That's right, it means bugger all.

What are your reactions?

I can't see how a team would function without support staff, whether they're the head coach or just the chief ball thrower, one thing that must be accepted is that reliable, experienced staff are generally in their late 30s or older. Simon Taufel has similarly commented on the undesirability of the international tour for young umpires.

This current tour is ridiculously long. 17 weeks in England, followed by 2 weeks in South Africa and then a further month in India (finishing two weeks before the commencement of the home Tests). I'm not surprised by this development and given that senior players are often rested nowadays, it can really only be expected to become more commonplace. When you consider how few international head coaches even live in the country they coach, I'm sure they're already going home at every opportunity.

I believe the last coach to do this was when Bob Simpson's position was made vacant. It's certainly not a thing that is very common. So far Nielsen hasn't done much for us although he has the weakest bunch to work with in sometime, I just don't think hes the right person for us during this stage.

Good for us, I hope he never comes back to coach us. He is a bloody useless. Time to appoint anew one. Realy, having him, i really cannot see a good future for us :facepalm

I am shocked! How will they performe in odi's without there coach i think he is going back to home in 4th odi it is ridiculous. As aussie1st said that he isn't the right person to coach or he is not happy with the team?We can't blame him to be honest maybe he is afraid of cricket and taking rest so he will go back home before odi's but i think this is very bad move.

I don`t see anything wrong with it. They`ve been on the road since Sep 08 and will be on tour till they finish with the ODIs in India. Coaches do not workmagic in the middle of a tour anyway. As long as they have someone to be in control, its okay.

A coach's job is to develop his players behind the scenes. When it comes to matchday things, the captain is more of an authority figure. Let Nielsen go home for a bit and spend time with his family.

After the 1st match we definitely need a coach that can analysis a game. Its been clear as day for quite a few months now that we suck in the middle stage. There isn't enough intent, I'm positive Buchanan would have noticed this and changed our tactics. Something certainly needs to change in that period especially without our blitzing starts.
