Has anyone here got Sky Broadband? If so, please tell me it's a good, reliable service that doesn't drop bloody connection every few seconds! I've had it with BT and we have Sky TV already, so getting Sky Broadband as well would save a lot of money - ?260 a year on average, according to the Mirror.

Heard about it, works fast but they've very less no. of customers.

Sky Broadband: Available to Sky TV customers in Sky's broadband network area taking Sky Broadband Unlimited, Sky Talk line rental and any Sky Talk calls package. Offer not available to existing Sky Broadband customers or in conjunction with any other Sky offer. Active Sky or BT compatible line required. Offer applied as a discount on your Sky Talk line rental for 6 months. Offer ends 31 May 2010. Sky Broadband Unlimited is ?15 a month if you stop taking Sky Talk calls and line rental. You must subscribe to Sky Broadband Unlimited for 12 months. McAfee security available free for 12 months with Sky, ?3 a month thereafter unless cancelled by the customer. Free security not available for MAC users with BT. Connect (up to 8Mb) at ?17 pm is available to customers outside our network area (?30 set-up cost for existing Sky TV customers). Connect has a monthly usage cap of 40GB and is subject to a Traffic Management Policy. Speed you get depends on factors including distance from the exchange and line quality. See sky.com for more details.

Only problem I had with Sky was having to change my default router settings, but that's easy.

On the unlimited packagae, I get no throttling, can game very easily with wired PC and wireless PS3 (whcih is ~20m from router) and can get download speeds of up to 2.5MB/s

thinking of getting sky broadband/tv deal in our shared house.

How quick is it to set up? because I don't really want to be without the internet for a week or two when I move in.

It can be a lengthy process tbh, if the house has the lines set-up, it might not be too bad.

It could take a couple of weeks, might take less. Depends on demand in the area. Ring them and find out.

cheers, will do. need to agree on something with the house-mates first.

Hi Sureshot - I've switched to Sky after an unbelievable amount of pratting around with BT - that's why I haven't been on for ages. I came back to 60 (sixty) emails!!!!

Our net connection had been bad for a long time, so I phoned BT to get it sorted out. The next thing we know, we have no broadband at all and no phone line! After another call to BT, it appears they got it into their heads that we requested the line to be terminated, which we hadn't of course. When the phone line was put back on, we were given a new number and were stuck with that for around a week.

I was told that we'd need to put through a new order for Broadband, so we did that and were told that it would take five working days to activate. So, after giving it a week, I contacted BT again and they said there was no order on our account - indeed, their system was saying that we have never had BT Broadband (!) :facepalm The final straw was the fact that they said that in order for us to go back to our discounted rate of ?19.99 a month, it would have to go upstairs to a complaints department, which would delay us getting Broadband for another ten days or so! I told them where to stick their broadband and now my net is flying along at 4.41Mbps (d/l at 560kbps), which is much faster than BT had ever been. According to an email I got from Sky, that speed could well increase as well:

Testing your speeds

* First, we'll test the different speeds and settings on your line.
* We'll also start your Sky Broadband off on the first day at a download speed of up to 4Mb.
* We'll then increase your speeds and set your line at the best speed possible with a reliable connection.
* Please note: while we're testing, speeds may vary a little and your connection may be intermittent over these first 10 days. Don't worry, this is normal.

One question Sureshot: how did you get into the Sky router to change the defaults? I want to change it to WPA2, if it isn't already set to that and also change the SSID and password. :)

Edit: Broadband is now only costing us ?12.50 instead of ?19.99 and if we go with Sky Talk at the end of the BT contract, that'll go down to ?7.50 a month.
