In my opinion i would choose the DS.
If you want excellent gameplay DS is your handheld. The touch screen really makes you feel like your in actually in the game. And there are lots of good games in the line up for 2006.

However if you want better graphics and the ability to listen to music play DVD's etc choose the PSP. But in my opinion picking the PSP would make you lose out on quality gaming fun =)

Like i said its only my opinion.

I'd say the PSP, I have seen both of these handheld consoles and find the DS a little unrefined. The PSP has wonderful graphics and its abilities outweigh the DS heavily.

My two cents.

i have heard the DS has VERY limited numbers of games

I have a PSP and it's absolutely excellent. You can go online and browse on the net, play games all over the world, can watch movies and clips on the psp and has plenty of features. So certainly PSP is the way to go. ALso because great games such as GTA and Virtual tennis are currently released.
