Texas vs Rice (NCAAF)

Those are UT Longhorns games (college).

The Rice-UT opening game is being played at Reliant Stadium which has a capacity of 71,500. Last I checked, there were only about 5,000-10,000 tickets remaining. That means at least 60,000 people are showing up to the college game. Reliant is also where the Houston Texans play. That just goes to show that college football is pretty much as popular as the NFL (although it is probably more popular).

Mark, the spread probably moved because we lost Scott Solomon, our best defensive player. It's a shame because the only way we're going to stop UT from blowing us out is defense, given that they lost a chunk of their offense to the NFL.

Unbelievable that these college games get such a big crowd and unbelievable how many people are betting on this one!

Wow! How crazy is that! It's just a school game. In Australia it'll be great if we got 1,000 people to a school game.

We used to get a few thousand out to school rugby matches, especially rivalry games and the finals, but that would normally be just crowding around the pitch. Universities here don't play much sport between each other.

We get over 100,000 each game. Tickets are always sold out weeks ahead and scalpers make a killing.

For Texas- OU a scalped ticket is usually 400-900 bucks

Apparently there was 6000 for one of the high school matches this season, I think it was in Christchurch. St Beeds vs someone, IIRC.
Not sure if that was just rumor, but I think I heard it on the radio.

Also our biggest stadium in NZ is only going to be 60,000, and that is with temporarily seating for the RWC. After the RWC, our biggest stadium is going to be 50,000, and I think the next biggest is about 40,000.

Are these matches played at NFL stadiums, or do the colleges have their own massive stadiums?

Auckland Uni has no room for a big stadium like that :/ King's - Grammar matches regularly draw 2-3 thousand, and the final would've had about that much too.

I suppose in some ways their college football is similar to our provincial tournaments. Players from there get selected for the Super 14/5 which is our NFL.

30 minutes to kick-off or whatever they call it over there! Anyone interested in the Rice Owls? Here is their website:

quite snazzy really! They do all sorts of sports. I for one am very impressed by the American support of sports at school level. Fantastic programs and incentives for young people.

Lol! Interesting to note that nearly all the Rice Owl stories on the website relate to heavy defeats by most of their teams in all forms of sports!:p

Rice is more known for academia, its one of the most prestigious schools in the country, and probably the most prestigious in Texas.
