Good morning all and happy weekend. After the disaster of letting the public choose my last draft and then pretty much everyone (but especially me - sorry all) losing interest very quickly indeed, I've decided to go with the draft idea that I really wanted to run all along: my first Budget Draft.

So the idea of this draft is that you can pick pretty much whoever you want. There are no restrictions here; everyone from Don Bradman to Roland Pope will be available, so long as they played in at least one Test match.

The rules are simple:
  1. We are trying to pick the best possible Test XI.
  2. All players must have played in at least one Test match.
  3. You can only pick a keeper as a specialist batsman if they have played at least one Test as a specialist batsman.
  4. The total of all eleven players' Test batting averages may not exceed 200.
Wait, what?
So the concept is quite simple really: you pretty much have to pick the best batting side you can without any good batsmen. I'm not unkind, so I'll ignore any decimals; Bradman would count as 99 of your 200, while Roland Pope would count as only 1.

|Batting Average|Budget Cost
:zim: :bat: Prince Masvaure|21.37|21
:zim: :bat: Kevin Kasuza|50.50|50
:zim: :bat: Craig Ervine|30.30|30
:zim: :wkb: Brendan Taylor|36.21|36
:zim: :ar: Sikandar Raza|35.07|35
:zim: :bat: Timycen Maruma|6.66|6
:zim: :wk: Regis Chakabva|25.26|25
:zim: :bwl: Don Tiripano|22.38|22
:zim: :bwl: Victor Nyauchi|8.50|8
:zim: :bwl: Ainsley Ndlovu|2.50|2
:zim: :bwl: Carlton Tshuma|n/a|0
:zim:| |235 :x:
So in this example, the Zimbabwean team is over budget, and (I can't believe I'm writing these words) would have to drop Kevin Kasuza to make space for someone like Brian Chari.

I hope that's clear to everyone. So please do feel free to start signing up, and remember: Daren Ganga is the way forward.

Do you have a crush on him? Why, in each draft, you write one or two lines regarding him.
Well the first time round, it was because I'd accidentally put together a couple of ideas that meant he was pretty much a guaranteed pick. And this was one of those ideas, so I thought I'd throw in a callback

My first pick will be the Australian mystery spinner Jack Iverson. In a draft where there will be such a tight limit on batting stats, what could be better than getting a high-quality spinner in my team without spending any of my budget. Yes, quite aside from Iverson's outstanding Test bowling average of just 15.23 runs per wicket across his admittedly very short Test career, he is remarkable for being one of the very few Test cricketers to finish his career with a batting average of less than one. This is perhaps all the more remarkable given that he could actually bat: in non-Test first-class matches, he averaged over 18 as a batsman.

Test Stats (7 matches)
:bat: 3 runs @ 0.75 (best 1*)
:bwl: 21 wickets @ 15.23 (1 5WI, best 6/27)

The easiest of picks first up. Arguably the greatest fast bowler ever, with 563 scalps at an average of 21, Glenn McGrath. Sure, i could’ve gone for someone with a batting average a couple runs less than his 7, but his bowling stats totally make up for it.

Stuart Law, first class average 50.52, test average: hasn't got one. 54* in his only test inns, meaning zero budget cost.

@DalePlaysCricket to pick next, a double pick
