Australia Crumble Under Pressure (10/156)

Defending world champions Australia cracked under the bowling pressure of Sri Lankan bowling quartet Vaas, Nissanka, Muralitharan and Chandana. A late order collapse capped off a miserable first morning for the home side as they slipped to be all out for 156 with only Justin Langer (72), Sundries (24) and Adam Gilchrist (16) able to make it into double figures.

Chaminda Vaas did not return to the bowling attack after the first session however Upul Chandana was able to finish the innings, finishing the innings with the best figures of 5/72. In an alarming record, all except of the wickets except two were adjudged LBW.

It is clear that the bowling attack of McGrath, Gillespie, Lee and Warne will have to perform at their best to keep the match within Australias reach. Much of that will rest on the conditions still providing the pacemen with the opportunity to move the ball and take wickets.

5 wickets for Upul Chandana, inspite of Murali being in the team. Well done!!

Well maybe becuz Murali bowled just 2 overs.

yeh unfortunatly the bug strikes again. murali bowled really well in those 2 overs aswell it kinda swung and the arm balls were great. but chandana bowled well but the batsman just couldnt get bat too ball.

That shows the bad footwork of the batsman.

i think a combination of bad footwork, poor shot selection and the ball moving around quite a bit. even for chandana and muralitharan it was kind of swinging through the air. very difficult. hopefully i will get the same assistance when i bowl

Gillespie fights back as Sri Lanka takes lead

Jason Gillespie led a spirited fightback by Australia on days 1 and 2 of the test match against Sri Lanka at the Sydney Cricket Ground today. Defending a first innings total of only 156, Gillespie showed typical Australian fight and pride on his way to capturing 5/47 from 19.0 overs.

The Sri Lankan innings was well lead by Tillekeratne (48), wicket keeper Sangakkara (40) and Jayawardene (39) as they contributed to the Sri Lankan total of 10/205 from 71 overs.

New ball specialists Glenn McGrath 1/36 and Gillespie made the most of the new ball as they took the early wickets of star batsman Sanath Jayasuria (3) and captain Marvin Attapattu (20) before the middle order stuck together to grind out a total to put the visitors in the box seat.

There now appears to be more pressure than ever on the new look Australian batting lineup as they have to, for the first time this season, chase runs instead of extend on a lead. Australian great Mark Taylor believes that this will bring out the best in the team

I think these situations generally strengthen the team. These times bring out that inner resolve in the players and we will now see who really has what it takes to succeed at this level of world cricket. Its a great opportunity for players like Marcus North, Simon Katich and Andrew Symonds to make a name for themselves but the pressure will really be on. Im sure if the experienced players of Langer, Ponting, Gilchrist and even Clarke can set the example the rest will follow.
