They're aren't 5 fielders on the boundary and the game isn't crawling along with everyone waiting for the exciting stuff to happen. In the middle overs, batsman are only interested in 1s an 2s and with 5 fielders on the boundary, they will rarely get any boundaries. Test cricket, on the other hand, is a constant challenge with bowlers actually trying to get wickets instead letting the game meander along.

Why don't we just have them play for 20 overs of powerplay and then 10 overs of the slog overs and simplify things? : The point of 50 over cricket is not to become completely a batsman's game, although the ICC are trying hard. I think the stifled period in the middle is fair enough--when you see close games, you will notice that that period is as tense as it gets.
