Story The Life and Times of Me [ICC2005]

A clear lead estabalished by us at the top of league 1 albeit because we have played 2 games and the second place team has only played 1. We have worked hard in training for those two matches and it really paid off, we have such a strong squad and it really shows when we lose a few early wickets or we are struggling to get a batsman out, we have the quality to drag those situations back into our favour. If we can get a draw in our upcomming county championship match then i will have fulfilled my target of not losing any of the first four games of the season, after that we might lose every one of em' but at least i will have reached my personal target!

I just mentioned the strength of our squad, this is epitomised by Muttiah Muralitharan, i was really needing the wicket of Andrew Strauss in the last match, he was the key to getting this team out or stopping them from reaching the target. I decided that because the wicket was turing a bit i would bring Murali on for a few overs to unsettle him whilst Jimmy went at him with some pace, i thought Jimmy would trouble him from around the wicket but Murlali claimed his wicket with the very first ball that he bowled, hes one of those guys that seems to better himself every time he releases that little red ball! It was a wonderfull delivery and it got what it deserved.

For our second County Championship match of the season we travel to Worcestershire. They have a nice pitch and there is normally something in it for everyone. They have a few international level batsmen such as Vikram Solanki, an good English spinner in Gareth Batty and also a Pakistani speed demon in the form of Shoaib Akhtar. Some may say that he is not what he used to be but i would like to to see those people padded up and facing delivery after delivery at 90 plus mph, then come back and say he isnt what he used to be! He is going to be wanting to make an impression on some of our international players ready for the upcomming tour of Pakistan, especially Freddie Flintoff so watch out for that battle!

Should be an interesting game this one! Worcestershire as you said have some very good players, and dont forget the old warhorse Graeme Hick! Moore is a good batsmen for them too, always seems to do well against me. Bat first if you win the toss, then you can try bat them out of the game and at the same time see how the pitch is going for the bowlers so you know who will exploit it best.

I am more than pleased to announce another unchanged squad, it?s not very often in cricket nowadays that you get that pleasure, its all chopping and changing. My view is that it can do nobody any good, what baffles me is when these county managers change winning teams! If a teams winning then stick with it! Derbyshire are one of the most consistent counties in my view, when I was there we hardly ever changed the team win or lose, maybe because we didn?t have any more players, but that?s beside the point. I once again point out the strength of out squad, and also the strength of theirs, were in for a great match!

(These stats show last seasons performance, after this match they will show the current seasons)

The wheather forecast is unusual for this part of the county.... Very good for the first days play and then... well.... rain, to put it bluntly, there might not be much play available here. If i was to win the toss i would bat first to make use of the pitch and then try to bowl them out in the wet conditions, batting on the pitch isnt going to be easy though, seamers are helped by the overhead conditions that will swing the ball and there is some turn in the pitch for Murali to work his magic, im backing Dominic Cork in this match as he is due a performance and Jimmy Anderson will be one to watch out for in these conditions.

I sent Chilts out to the middle to meet with Vikram Solanki and the umpires for the toss, i instructed him to pick heads and also that if he won the toss he must choose to bat, unfortunately we didnt have the liberty as the coin came down tails up and Vikram chose wisely and put us in to field. A wise choice but not one that concerns us greatly, the boys have all got their iPod's at the ready and their novels and bookmarks handy as they get set for a rain interrupted four days of quality cricket!

Not the start to the match I was looking for, we have conceded runs and we haven?t taken wickets, to be honest I am disappointed. My aim as always, was to restrict them to about 100 runs per session, if they got over that amount i would have wanted them to be at least three wickets down. 12 runs over the target may not seem like much not but over three or four sessions it amounts to 36 or 48 runs! The bowlers individually didnt take much stick, the highest being 3.6 and 3.25 per over, the rest being about 2.5 which is a well and good when your taking wickets also but we have failed to do that so far, with the exception of one over in the middle from Corky.

Peters and Solanki got off to a slow start but were never really troubled by our bowlers, Jimmy and Corky were putting it in the right areas but Vikram and Peters just werent biting, Jimmy was replaced by Chapps in the seam attack but i kept bowling Corky because he was the most economical, It turned out to be a good plan because he struck twice in an over to dismiss both the opening pair. Peters eventually got out as he misjudged a shot against a Corkcy delivery that nipped back in at him, he was bowled all over the place and we had the breakthrough.

That breakthorugh turned into a double breakthrough two balls later when Vikram Solanki fell to Corky, Dom stuck in the short delivery because he thought Solanki would be trying to build a new partnership and it worked, he was too tempted to play a shot and was very late on the backfoot drive, it took the edge and Heggy collected it nicely behind the stumps again. Corkcy was delighted and so was the team, they had thier tails up but it didnt come to anything in the end and both Corky and Chapps ran out of steam.

I brought Freddie and Murali on to try and get another wicket before lunch but it didnt work, not for lack of trying though, Murali was getting some grip and Freddie has had some close LBW's turned down. Its not been a very enjoyable watch from the balcony but if we can get one out just after lunch then we are in with a shot, the black clouds are way over yonder and they may come into play late afternoon, fingers crossed because in this form we will need them!

This innings hangs in the balance. Some wickets and Lancashire definetly have the advantage but if this turns out to be a big partnership it will be a great platform for the rest of the Worcestershire innings.

I was desparate for another wicket but unfortunately not even Murali looked like getting it...
