Just heard off the telly Thorpe has retired effective immediately. I hear it also came right after KP got out.

This is bad news! Thorpe was one of my favourites of England. I hope he does well after this career.

What an irony: the message came after Pietersen was out.

Well it was only a matter of time.He and Lehmann too had to retire because of the younger players coming through.

Its true:

We can also tell you that Graham Thorpe has announced his
retirement from international cricket with immediate effect. For
all the news on that one please do look at http://www.cricinfo.com

End of over 2 (7 runs) Australia 9/0 (lead by 44 runs)
MJ Hoggard 1-0-7-0 - Nursery End
ML Hayden 4* (5b) JL Langer 5* (7b 1x4)
:(

I'm sure Channel 4 would have said it as well.
Had to come i guess at least he got to play 100 matches

Yeah, you're right about that. Here is the BBC News.

Thorpe announces Test retirement

England batsman Graham Thorpe has announced his retirement from Test cricket with immediate effect.
The left-hander played his 100th Test against Bangladesh last month but was dropped for the opening match of the Ashes series against Australia.

"I have enjoyed my time with England and have wished the team every success in this Ashes series," he said.

"I am proud to have been part of a successful era in English cricket."

What an unceremonious way to leave the game. He would have retired after this series anyway. Anyhow...

Perfect way out would have been the Ashes. Having your last game against Bangladesh isn't too great

Yeah. That's what he would have gotten in India. :) I guess the debate of soft selection policies takes a humane perspective, too.

Well Sky Sports announced right when play started today so it was NOT after KP got out.

Anyways Thorpie has been a great servant for English cricket, a match winner more than anything else. Has played some of the most crucial knocks that I can remember and has also saved many games for his country.

His record was also pretty good for a batsman coming in at no.5 and no.6. I still remember his awesome double hundred vs NZ, and rate it as one of the best ever.

He was also probably the most reliable batsman of his time, and will be surely missed. But its time to look ahead, and England have a got another great cricketer in KP. King Kev has started well in both forms of cricket, and looks like he'll be in this England side for a long time, and an important member of the 2007 world cup winning squad.

yeah he is retiring without scoring a century in his odi carrer but i have to accept the fact that he was an awesome entertainer

Probably England's best batsman in the last 10-15 years or so
I'd agree, its a real shame. I thought he still had something to offer England.
