_42362615_curbs_pa300.jpg

It looks like Alan Curbrishley and Slaven Bilic could be in the running to become the next Newcastle United boss after Kevin Keegan resigned a week ago. Newcastle United were recently taken over Indian based company Reliance Industries Limited and they are set to give huge amount of transfer kitty to the new manager.

SkyBet today revealed who they believe to be the front runners for the vacant job at St James Park. Their top bet is former West Ham United and Charlton Athletic boss Alan Curbrishley. Just behind Curbs is current Croatia head coach Slaven Bilić.

Joe Kinnear and Roy Keane are next in the line for the vacant job. Behind them is former Newcastle United skipper Alan Shearer who is the fans favourite for the job at Newcastle United. Shearer scored 148 goals in 202 appearances for the Magpies. Shearer was also an inspirational captain and led from the front.

Former Manchester City and England boss Sven Goran-Erickson, current Hull City boss Phil Brown and former Manchester United player and West Brom manager Bryan Hughes are on the list in attempt to fill the list of potential candidates and also for the odds sake.

Alan Curbrishley - 5/4

Good luck with this. I'm playing a Newcastle game atm with fm 08 and if you sell the right players you can buy better players. I'm currently in pursuit of Alves and if everything goes to plan I'm hoping to get Aguero too.

KEANO APPOINTED

oi5dg4.jpg

Newcastle United have appointed Roy Keane as their new manager on a three-year contract. The Tyneside club saw Kevin Keegan resign last week and said they wanted a new boss for before the start of the new season in July. Keane, 37, had been out of work since resigning as manager of Sunderland on 9 June.

"Magpies are delighted to announce the appointment of Roy Keane as manager," said a club statement. The new manager will be officially unveiled at the 1600 GMT news conference on Monday. "I'm very pleased indeed, I'll say more at the news conference on Thursday," said 37-year-old Keane.

Keegan resigned after lengthy talks with former owner Mike Ashley after just 6 months in charge. Magpies ended the last season in 12th position ahead of Tottenham Hotspur.

Yorke on Keane's Appointment

Keane had also been linked with the managerial vacancy at West Ham. He was successful during two years at the helm of Magpies' Tyneside rivals Sunderland, helping them be promoted to the Premier League and then next season helping them survive in the Premier League.

Magpies start their Premier League campaign away at Old Trafford against Keane's former playing side and current Champions Manchester United.

Former Newcastle striker Alan Shearer told BBC Sport: "It is not a surprise choice. Newcastle needs someone who can put the club back together again and I think he can do that. At Sunderland he was renowned for innovative thinking, and the strict discpiline he brought inthe club.

Veteran Sunderland midfielder Dwight Yorke, who played for Keane at Sunderland, said: "He gets the best out of players, he's a very approachable, likeable man and I'm sure the players will enjoy his training and his company.

Slaven Bilic, who currently is managing Croatia, had also been linked with the job but had already ruled himself out of the running. "I'm afraid you are talking to the wrong man," Bilic told the local newspaper. "I don't know anything and have had no contact at all from Newcastle United. I'm not your man, I can definitely say that."

KEANO PRESS CONFERENCE

2a0m1d2.jpg

"So Roy, you sit here today having becoming the successor of Kevin Keegan in becoming the manager of Newcastle United, you played the majority of your playing career for rivals Manchester United, and you have also managed the arch rivals Sunderland, what will the fans think of this and how will you deal with it?"

I will understand if the fans dont like me over here, but that was the past. The only thing I am thinking about now is the present and the future, with Newcastle United and as we get the results the fans will start loving me.

"What was the reason why you left Sunderland at the end of last season?"

We didnt end the last season as expected. We were safe but the results werent coming. There was some pressure from above on me to perform. But I must Naill and other members have supported be through out my time at Sunderland.

"You enjoyed instant success at Sunderland. When you took over as manager Sunderland were rock bottom in the Championship and now two seasons later they are safe in the Premiership. Now what are your objectives this season as Newcastle United manager?"

Newcastle United have some really good players. All the players have some special ability. My job will be to use the players in the right areas and position at the right time. My objective for now will be to qualify for Europe next season and reach the quarter finals in all cup competitions.

"What have you thought out on the transfers of the club since you were announced as manager yesterday?"

I will have a look at the transfer targets today and buy the best possible players who are good for the club for the present and also for the future of the club. We need some good players in every position and I have some targets in my mind which I will be discussing with my staff.

"Have you been promised money from the new Indian owners?"

Of course, the club is now one of the richest in the world, I have been promised a big transfer budget now and more in January. They have asked me to use this money for the transfers that will benefit the club and also buy the best players of the world who are good for the club.

"You face tough battle from the first match itself as you play Manchester United at Old Trafford on the opening day."

Old Trafford is the worst place to visit if you are the opposition manager. Manchester United are the champions of England and Europe. They have some great players like Rooney, Ronaldo, Giggs, Scholes, Ferdinand who have some special ability in them to change the game and they are always a threat to any side. I am looking forward to manage Newcastle United against my manager Sir Alex Ferguson and his Manchester United.

"Thanks Roy"

Nice start Shan! Keano was the wrong choice, they should of brought back Keegan as there is new owners, and have Alan Shearer as Kev's assistant! :)

Yeah come on Keano! Lets the show the magpies fans what you can do!

Keano Keano Keano!!!! Great decision to appoint a great new manager. Come on you reds :p.

If you haven't noticed I will put in banter about Man Utd :p

As Santa Cruz arrived at St James Park, Damien Duff, Geremi, Alan Smith and Habib Beye have all departed. Alan Smith and Geremi have been loaned out for a season while the otehr two have left on permanent basis.

Damien Duff, 29, has signed for South Coast club Portsmouth for a transfer fee of 7.5 million pounds. While Habib Beye has joined French champions Olympique Lyon for a fee of 1.6 million pounds.

Alan Smith will join West Ham united on a season long loan with an option to buy of 4.8 millions for West Ham to make the move permanent and on the same basis Geremi joins French club Bordeaux with an option to buy of 2.8 millions.

This what Roy keane at to say to club's official website. "I am glad we were able to sign Roque. He was brilliant for Rovers in his first season in England and hope does the same for us. He is the kind of striker the club needs at the moment. He has pace and is also good in the air.

Damien, Habib unfortunately had to leave the club on permanent basis as I don't see them good enough to help us achieve our objective. While Alan and Geremi will get some regular football with their respective clubs which was not possible over here at Newcastle. I wish all of them good luck ahead."

Gai made his senior debut against Girona FC in the Copa Catalunya semi final match. After impressive performances Gai was handed his first international debut against Chile and became the youngest ever player to play for Israel.

Here is what Roy Keane had to say about the transfers:"Its great we have signed Andrei and Kevin. Andrei showed his worth during the EURO 2008 and was outstanding in the tournament. He can play as a striker as well in the midfield which gives us an extra option. While Kevin is one of the most underrated footballers.

"I am surprised he hasn't yet made his debut for England which he deserves. He has performed and led from the front for Bolton Wanderers and I hope he continues to perform on regular basis for Newcastle. Gai is very young player he can play as a winger or in center midfield. He has a lot pace and good range of passing ability."
