The England and Wales Cricket Board is on course to create its own version of the Indian Premier League by 2010, says chief executive David Collier.
Collier told BBC Radio Four that talks with billionaire investor Sir Allen Stanford were "well advanced".
"We've had some very positive and constructive discussions with Sir Allen during the last week," said Collier.
"I think Sir Allen has certainly mentioned 2010 and I think that's the more likely (date)."

I really do hope this goes ahead.

I don't. If the standard of the IPL is anything to go by it's a very bad idea. The standard of cricket in the IPL thus far has been very poor. It's just been dominated too much by the batting, but the batting's not actually been that great, the mass of runs has been mainly due to some very poor bowling. This is proven by the fact that the only poor pitch so far has resulted in a very low scoring, bowler dominated game, thus proving that the batting isn't that great. A mix of batsmen friendly pitches and poor bowling has taken away from the spectacle, and i'd much rather watch England's domestic T20 tournament as the standard of cricket is far, far better. I really hope that the ECB see sense and don't just follow the dollars.

We already have the Twenty20 cup in domestic cricket and we have the Twenty20 World Cup here in a few years time (as long as the Zimbabwe situation is sorted). We don't need anymore Twenty20 cricket over in England.

I think its important to keep all forms of the game balanced. Twenty20 has been balanced well until the IPL started coming in. We need to keep Test cricket as the ultimate obviously and we also need one day games to be more recognized to keep up with the impact Twenty20 has had.

I certainly don't see why they feel the need to cut it to 6 teams. I for one won't watch if I can't watch Kent.

England ponders six-region T20 option

If England is to create a viable Twenty20 competition to rival the Indian Premier League, then the 18 first-class counties are going to have to bite the bullet and merge into six regional sides.

now im being very open minded about the possibility of an EPL, but i most definatly would not watch if lancashire and yorkshire become one team!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! would not be happy

League cricket cannot work except in India. U guys done have eyeballs to sell TV rights. And TV rights is what is major source of funding for the league.

Anyways who says IPL has poor standard. T20 is only for batsman and if you want wickets falling go watch RSA play Bangladesh on green top in Test match. Even India can replace Bangladesh.

T20 is of poor standard, just because it's a batsman friendly game doesn't mean that the bowlers should be of poor standard. The t20 cup in England is a much more even contest, as proven by the rarity of hundreds, we've already seen hundreds from McCullum, Hussey, Symonds and Sehwag (i think, correct me if i'm wrong), which shows that the quality of bowling just hasn't been there. Bowlers in the British T20 Cup have proven themselves by bowling the right lengths and geting their variations in, something not done in India. Even t20 should be an even contest between batsman and bowler, if that is taken away then the game is pointless and cricket will lose its prestige and what I love about the game, and the result would be a contest between countries over who can hit the ball the furthest. The English twenty20 competition is exciting and adds to the game, the IPL is a Mickey-Mouse tournament thats throwing money at the game, and could potentially ruin the game. I'm not a fan.

Or maybe just the superior quality of batting in the IPL compared to the T20 Cup in England?

I rather would start to think,
Which country has introduced T20 cricket? :p

I don't think that's the reason personally, the t20 cup has had players like Trescothick, Flintoff, Hodge, Jayasuriya, Langer, Collingwood, Hamish Marshall, Chanderpaul, Katich, Pietersen, Samuels, etc etc. The batting quality is slightly higher in the IPL, but as is the supposed bowling quality. This shows that although the big names are in town the quality of cricket is still poor. The batsmen shouldn't be able to dominate this much, it just makes it boring. The beauty of English domestic Twenty20 cricket is that supposed small name bowlers can make a name for themselves, Kirtley, Schofield, Simon Cook, Arafat, Ireland, Doshi, McLaren. If they're just being carted around week in week out there's no balance, and top players overcoming tough conditions and good bowling is what makes professional cricket exciting. The IPL just doesn't, it was alright at the start, but the pure batting domination has bored me already, and i've already lost interest.

Tbh, it is unfair to say that Indian bowlers cannot make a name for themselves. Already in the tournament, Gony, Kulkarni and Bhattia have impressed.

I guess I inferred from that bit. Sorry for the inference, the history homework must have got into my head.

Gah, what's the point in all this shite. Just leave it as it is. The current English T20 is miles more exciting than the IPL and it probably always will be.
