Hildebrand comes under heavy criticism

A disappointed Timo Hildebrand at the end of the game

Stuttgart goalkeeper Timo Hildebrand has been criticised by pundits and fans for his error that led to Valerenga's opening goal in the 1st leg of their 1st Round Uefa Cup tie. Hildebrand who also is Germany's third choice goalkeeper, failed to control a headed pass back from Andreas Hinkel, allowing opponent striker Tore Andre Flo to take the ball and pass it to Espen Pettersen who then just had to tap it into an empty goal.

Former World Cup hero Rudi Voller said mistakes like these can often decide knockout ties.

"It was shocking to see one of the finest goalkeepers make an error like that. He was probably thinking too far ahead, and as a result dint focus on the ball. It was a costly mistake, and something he cant afford to do in a knockout game," said Voller.

Michael Agger, a 34 year old Stuttgart fan believes Ranieri should replace Hildebrand with a new goalkeeper.

"We need a better goalkeeper, if we are to do well in Europe. Hildebrand showed the other night that he isnt good enough."

Alexander Stolz and Michael Langer are the other two goalkeepers at the club, although Claudio Ranieri was rumoured to be interested in Chelsea's Carlo Cudicini.

Ranieri defends Hildebrand

Stuttgart manager Claudio Ranieri has rubbished criticism aimed at goalkeeper Timo Hildebrand following his crucial error that led to a Valerenga goal in the Uefa Cup 1st round game in Oslo.

"Even the best make mistakes. Timo is one of my key players, and I think anyone who doubts his ability should stop watching Football. The fact that he is now in the German national team gives a proper indication of his quality," said Ranieri.

Raneiri also denied rumours that he was looking to sign fellow Italian Carlo Cudicini during the January transfer window.

"This is completely untrue. I am good friends with Carlo, but we are not trying to sign him. Even if I do get a goalkeeper in the future, it will be a backup to Hildebrand who is without any doubt my first choice here," added the 53 year old.

Ranieri has personally met Hildebrand at the latter's residence in order to show his support and confidence in the young keeper.

thats great to see ranieri defend his goal keeper. with the age of lehman and khan hildebrand will be firmly in line to be germanys number 1 keeper very shortly.

Claudio Ranieri and his players have a short gap of four days before their next game, which is the German Cup Second Round match against VfL Wolfsburg. Infact that will be the first of two meetings between Stuttgart and Wolfsburg in the span of just six days. The second game being a Bundesliga encounter at Wolfsburg's Volkswagen-Arena.

Thursday (15.9.2005)
After the game, Ranieri and a few of his players and staff went out to have a look at the city of Oslo. Most of the players headed for a night club, while a few went for shopping. Ranieri himself visited a few tourist spots before returning back to the team hotel.

Friday (16.9.2005)
Ranieri's players returned from Oslo on Friday morning. Ranieri told the players to go home and take a day's rest, before heading home himself. By afternoon, the criticism of Hildebrand was all over Stuttgart, in newspapers, televisions, the internet, etc. Ranieri was at his office when he saw one of the TV channels show Rudi Voller and some of the Stuttgart fans blame Hildebrand for last night's drawn game against weaker opposition (Valerenga). Ranieri then saw a similar article at ESPN's Soccernet website.

"What is wrong with these people, instead of encouraging Timo, they are all stabbing him from the back," Ranieri told himself.

Immediately he called up Hildebrand at his residence and told him not to bother one bit about these stupid comments being made. He infact suggested Hildebrand to completely avoid the television, newspapers and the internet for some time. The player assured Ranieri that he was not affected at all by these comments, and was enjoying his time at home. Hildebrand then even asked Ranieri to come over for coffee, something the manager accepted.
Just as Ranieri was about to leave the club's premises, press reporters surrounded him, asking the Italian mainly about Hildebrand's error last night. Ranieri, who was fuming by now, blasted anyone and everyone who had questioned the goalkeeper's ability and voiced his full support and backing towards the player, even labelling him as his key player and first choice goalkeeper. He then left for Hildebrand's residence.

That night Chairman Erwin Staudt contacted Ranieri by phone and praised him for showing his support to Hildebrand. Ranieri convinced Staudt that the player himself was least bothered with what was being said and was already looking forward to the DFB Pokal (German Cup) game.

Saturday (17.9.2005)
Hildebrand and all the other players were back at training. Ranieri had arranged a yoga session as well to freshen up the players, something that was well received. The players then were involved in sessions involving strength, aerobic and tactics. The goalkeepers to worked on their strength, aerobic and tactics. Apart from this they were asked to save penalties and freekicks from various positions. The players then practiced corners, as Ranieri tried to get his defenders to handle such situations properly.

stuttgarttraining9bn9.jpg

After training Ranieri worked on next match's tactics along with assistant manager Andreas Brehme and the other coaches. They went through video tapes of Wolfsburg matches and made note of players to mark, players to target, and the general strategy to employ. They also saw the Bundesliga match between M?nchengladbach and Wolfsburg that was being played on that day. Following that Ranieri also went through some of the match videos of the Stuttgart reserves team and the youth team to keep an eye on the players. He was happy with the progress of Jens Harter and said he might have to pick him for the first team very soon.

Update from the Bundesliga:

With most teams not playing after being involved in midweek European games, just five matches were played in the Bundesliga on Saturday.

Results:

And just a total of four goals were scored, with four 1-0 results and one 0-0 draw.

But that 1-0 win was enough for Schalke to extend its lead at the top of the table.

Table:
tableka2.jpg

K?ln's moved up to 12th place, while Hamburg and Wolfsburg moved upto 6th and 7th place respectively. As a result Stuttgart, who obviously werent in action, dropped down to eight place.

Borussia M?nchedgladbach poor form continued as they remain rock bottom with just a point from five games.

Sunday (18.9.2005)
Training continued under the supervision of Ranieri and his coaching staff as they tried to explain their tactics to the players. Being a home game, and with Wolfsburg too having a rather dodgy back four, a rather attacking strategy had been planned. Players then had a small 7 vs 7 game, where Ranieri tried to get the players to make more use of the flanks. Gronkjaer and Hitzlsperger had a busy time.

Later, Ranieri modified his tactics a bit after watching his players during the day.

Monday (19.9.2005)
The players trained at the stadium today. Besides fitness exercises, Ranieri and his coaching staff made the players perform each and everything from passing, crossing, long balls, corners, direct and indirect freekicks, penalties. Ranieri then organised a match simulation session where in the goalkeepers and defenders had to prevent the midfield and attacking players from scoring for a certain time period. Ranieri and Brehme after consulting with all the coaches prepared the final tactics for tomorrow's game, and Ranieri himself explained it to the players on the whiteboard.

Tuesday (20.9.2005)
The players had another training session in the morning and a light one just prior to the game, at the stadium itself. The Wolfsburg players too were seen warming up just before the game.

Ranieri had a friendly conversation with Wolfsburg manager Holger Fach.

Preview: VfB Stuttgart vs VfL Wolfsburg - DFB Pokal 2nd Round

Stuttgart meet Wolfsburg in the DFB Pokal 2nd Round

This week sees a double header between VfB Stuttgart and VFL Wolfsburg, the first of which takes place tomorrow at the Gottlieb-Daimler stadion.

Wolfsburg were one of just ten teams involved in Bundesliga matches this past weekend. Holger Fach's side ran out 1-0 winners over struggling Borussia M?nchengladbach. And the 43 year old manager is confident of beating Stuttgart at their home.

"Stuttgart struggled against a weaker opposition in the UEFA Cup, and we believe that we can exploit their weaknesses. Their goalkeeper will be under pressure as well, so we will keep him busy. I am pretty sure we will go through to the next round," said Holger.

Stuttgart on the other hand dint have any game in the weekend because of the UEFA Cup game against Valerenga on Thursday, which they drew 2-2. The reds trailed the game for more than seventy minutes, and then after scoring the equaliser through Mario Carevic, went ahead in the 86th minute thanks to a Geir Birkeland own goal. But an away win was not to be, as Valerenga substitute Havard Lie scored in the final minute of normal time, and the game ended 2-2. Although it must be said that the two away goals does give Stuttgart the advantage ahead of the home leg.

However Goalkeeper Timo Hildebrand came under heavy criticism following his error that led to the first Valerenga goal. But Manager Claudio Ranieri has come in support of his player, calling the goalkeeper, 'his first choice' at the club.

About the game Ranieri believes the experience of a European knockout tie could help his players to perform well in the DFB Pokal.

"Even though in Europe, we have to play two legs, it is still a knockout format. We also played in the ligapokal tournament which was also knockout, so all in all I think our players are more adapted to the knockout format which is a crucial factor. Wolfsburg are a good side and are coming here following a victory, but we are more than ready to face them," said Ranieri.

Stuttgart beat Wattenscheid 2-0 in the first round of the competition while Wolfsburg required penalties to overcome Energie Cottbus, after the match ended 1-1 after normal and extra time.

I expect that Hildebrand will bounce back with an impressive performance.

Timo....From zero to hero!

DFB Pokal 2nd Round
VfB Stuttgart vs VfL Wolfsburg
Gottlieb-Daimler stadion

The Match:
Two Bundesliga sides lock horns at the Gottlieb-Daimler stadion in this highly anticipated second round tie of the DFB Pokal (German Cup). The home side and especially goalkeeper have come under some criticism following a 2-2 draw with Norwegian team Valerenga in the UEFA Cup. Wolfsburg on the other hand are coming off a 1-0 victory over Borussia M?nchengladbach in Saturday's Bundesliga encounter.

The lineups at the start of the game:

Subs:

Ranieri going with the 4-4-2 diamond again. Mario Carevic, who came on as a substitute and scored in midweek, is back in the starting lineup at the top of the diamond, and behind the two strikers, Jon Dahl Tomasson and Cacau. Thomas Hitzlsperger and Jesper Gronkjaer start on the left and right flank respectively, with Fernando Meira at the back of the diamond. Boris Zivkovic replaces Ludovic Magnin in the centre of defence, alongside Markus Babbel who was man of the match in the game against Valerenga. Heiko Gerber plays left back, while captain Andreas Hinkel is at right back. Under pressure Timo Hildebrand keeps goal.
The opponents have the standard 4-4-2 formation. The Argentinian duo of Juan Carlos Menseguez and Andres D'Alessandro are the ones Stuttgart must watch out for.

What a thriller it turned to be. Claudio Ranieri who rarely shows his expressions was also left bitting his fingernails.

Stuttgart I thought had the better of the first half, which turned out to be goalless for both teams. Cacau, Carevic and Tomasson all had decent chances. Cacau's header was probably the best one, but was saved brilliantly by Simon Jentzsch. Timo Hildebrand on the other hand was troubled just once in the entire half, by Andres D'Alessandro's freekick.

The second half also we started off well and deservedly took the lead through Thomas Hitzlsperger. Markus Babbel volleyed the ball over from the right and Hitzlsperger was on the end of the ball to head it into the net. Hitzlsperger sprinter to the corner flag, jumped and punched the air before being hugged by his team-mates. But after the goal, Stuttgart went on the defensive, bringing on defensive midfielder Silvio Meibner for striker Cacau. Meibner took Meira's position while the latter went back and formed a five man defence along with Gerber, Zivkovic, Babbel and Hinkel. As a result Wolfsburg started having more of the ball, as Stuttgart began defending the one goal lead. They came close to equalising through Levan Tskitishvilli and Andres D'Alessandro, but in both cases Timo Hildebrand came out on top. We also tried to hit them on the counter and both our wingers Hitzlsperger and Gronkjaer had decent attempts. But then they did get the equaliser, and it was indeed one of the Argentinians, Juan Carlos Menseguez who scored for the visitors, picking up a nice pass from the other Argentinian D'Alessandro and finding a way past the Stuttgart defence and the goalkeeper. Ranieri then brought on Danijel Ljuboja for Fernando Meira, to try and take the lead again. But the pouring rain made it really difficult for the players. Andreas Hinkel though did make a fine run from the right and had a good shot at goal, but was put out for a corner by Jentzsch. Tomasson could have sealed in the dying minutes but his header was just wide of the Wolfsburg goal.

So we headed for extra time. Ranieri asked his players to stay calm and keep trying. The plan was to use the flanks mainly, while two of the central defenders were told to stay back and prevent Wolfsburg from counterattacking. There was also one substitution made, with Jesper Gronkjaer making way for Christian Tiffert.

But the weather as well as the tired legs meant there were no major chances in those thirty minutes of extra time. Leven Tskitishvilli came the closest, but his shot was too weak to bother Hildebrand.

Penalties once again, and Ranieri could only remember the Liga Pokal semi-final against Schakle. But Hildebrand silenced his critics by making as many as five saves to take his team through to the next round. Silvio Meibner scored the winning penalty.

I thought Andres D'Alessandro had a fantastic game, but defensive midfielder Pablo Thiam, who too did very well, was named man of the match.

Thomas Hitzlsperger and shootout hero Timo Hildebrand were our best players.

Pick of the round!

As for the penalty shoot out, you had it at 3-2 when Ljuboja missed (bloody substitutes) but luckily enough good home in the end. Penalty shoot outs would be half the reason why Ranieri has a head full of grey hair.

Naah! He is bloody lucky to be old and not Bald!

But a heroic performance by Timo. I can expect the media singing his praise. Shameless people. Great that CR stuck with his player.

Dont remember Ranieri being involved in too many penalties during his time at Chelsea.

Yup we would have won 4-2 if Ljuboja scored, 4-3 if Hinkel or Zivkovic scored, and 5-4 if Babbel scored, but all of them failed to do so!

On the other hand had Christian Tiffert missed his shot, then we would have lost 3-4.

Both goalkeepers did well, since all the misses were saves. Hildebrand made 5, while Jentzsch made 4.

Shameless indeed.

But tbh, Ranieri dint really have an option, as both the backup goalkeepers, Alexander Stolz and Michael Langer are way too inexperienced.

Hero Hildebrand takes Stuttgart through

Hildebrand points to the crowd after making the first of five saves in the shootout

After being criticised for his error in the UEFA Cup match against Valerenga that led to an opposition goal, Timo Hildebrand came back to silence the critics with a match winning performance in last night's DFB Pokal second round tie against VfL Wolfsburg.

The match ended 1-1 after normal and extra time, with Thomas Hitzlsperger and Juan Carlos Menseguez scoring for Stuttgart and Wolfsburg respectively.

But Hildebrand then made as many as five saves in a high pressure penalty shootout and Stuttgart won 5-4.

Manager Claudio Ranieri was one of the first to praise the German keeper for his fine performance under pressure.

"Timo was fantastic, and despite being under pressure, he handled himself and his team very well. He is a true hero, and I am proud of having him in my team. All those who had doubted his ability will now have to eat their words," said Ranieri.

The player himself was delighted with the shootout win.

"I was a bit disappointed when they scored, because we were playing well and should have won in normal time. But I'm glad we won in the end, and am extremely happy to have made those saves. I did not want a repeat of the ligapokal semi-final against Schalke, when we unfortunately lost," said Hildebrand.

Tuesday (20.9.2005)
After the game, Ranieri went to the player's dressing room and congratulated them on the win.

"Well done, boys. We could have won it in normal time, but it doesnt matter now. Overall it was a good performance, and I was pleased to see the effort that was put in by each and every one of you. Infact I'm so happy that the drinks are on me tonight.

Also you can take both tomorrow and day after off. So enjoy yourselves because you deserve it!,"

The players roared, cheered and thanked the manager for that.

The players were also informed that chairman Erwin Staudt had organised a party tomorrow night.

Later that night most of the players celebrated the win at one of Stuttgart's well known pubs, with manager Ranieri sponsoring the event.

Wednesday (21.9.2005)
With the first team players enjoying the first of two days off, Ranieri arrived at the club late in the afternoon. After going through some paperwork, he went and watched the youth team play a midweek game. He was particularly impressed by Serdar Tasci, a young Turkish defender, and asked his coaches to keep him informed of the player's progress.

That night, Ranieri attended the chairman's party, where he got to meet the wives and girlfriends of his players and staff. He came to know a lot more about the players and their lives, and was also congratulated by the chairman himself for the work done till now.

Ranieri at the chairman's party

Thursday (22.9.2005)
Ranieri spent most of the day at home. In the evening he did go to the club, where he along with assistant manager Andreas Brehme and other coaching staff went through more videos tapes of matches involving VfL Wolfsburg. Ranieri had also asked for videos of Andres D'Alessandro, who did give Stuttgart a tough time the other night.

"I knew he was good, but on Tuesday he was playing like a superstar. He has excellent ball control skills and is very creative," Ranieri told Brehme and the other coaches.

"I want our defenders to see his tapes as well, so that they can understand his movements."

That night Ranieri had dinner with one of his close friends, and former Italian manager, Giovanni Trappatoni. The two discussed a number of things, including football ofcourse.

Friday (23.9.2005)

After a well deserved two day break the players arrived for training on Friday morning, looking fresh and ready. CR's purpose of giving two days off was hence served. He could afford to do as Stuttgart's opponents on Sunday were once again VfL Wolfsburg.

After warm-up and training exercises, the players were involved in their regular schedules.

stuttgarttraining7gp7.jpg

Fernando Meira training with physio Gerhard Worn

CR had the defenders handle free kick situations, as well as crosses. This after they were unable to defend Stuttgart's 1-0 lead in Tuesday's game.

Players were also shown Wolfsburg's match videos, and as Ranieri had instructed, videos of Andres D'Alessandro during his days in South America, Portsmouth as well as Wolfsburg.

Saturday (24.9.2005)
Another day of training, and of longer duration, aimed at getting the players fully fit for tomorrow's game. Ranieri also gave the players the whiteboard presentation of the match tactics and strategies. Once again he told them to watch out for D'Alessandro and Menseguez, the two Argentinians.

The players were then assigned specific tasks to practice, before taking part in team activities.

Sunday (25.9.2005)
The team left for Wolfsburg early and did their practice there itself. A quick training session in the morning was followed by a light one just before the game at Wolfburg's Volkswagen-Arena stadion.

Wolfburg's stadium, the Volkswagen-Arena

Ranieri then gave the players his final instructions for the game.

"Wolfsburg will be looking for revenge and hence they might be tempted to make some rash tackles. We can use this to our advantage. Stick to the gameplan and try and communicate properly between yourselves. I dont want any sort of confusion. And yes, watch out for the two Argentinians I told you about. They are dangerous."

i love the presentation in this thread sid. it really is superb

Have to agree its really superb. this is going to be a thriller of a story. Cmon Stuttgart
