Warne lands BBC Overseas accolade

Australian leg-spin great Shane Warne has been named BBC Overseas Sports Personality of the Year 2005.
He will receive the award from Richie Benaud during Sunday's programme, which is shown on BBC ONE from 2000 GMT.

Warne, 36, was Australia's shining light this year, taking 40 wickets in the Ashes defeat to England.

"I am very proud of this achievement and am delighted to receive this award," said Test cricket's leading wicket-taker with 645 victims.

Warne was up against strong competition in the running for the award, with Formula One champion Fernando Alonso, six-times Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong and Wimbledon champ Roger Federer among his rivals.

"Shane Warne has entertained cricket fans for years with his outstanding talent and contributed enormously to a thrilling Ashes series," said programme editor Philip Bernie.

"His extraordinary achievements on the field, combined with his charismatic personality have made him a true sporting superstar, and an extremely worthy winner of this award."

Quite right too. Nice to see a real personality win an award. Now all that need's to happen is Flintoff win the overall award and England to win the team award. Having done well in last year's award's and with there not having been any other major sporting event this year, they really should win.

I remember Liverpool 'only' won the Europe Cup I. So I think they are contenders too. And Gerard is a good player to be nominated too. He almost dragged Liverpool himself to the triumph of Europe Cup I.

Here is the news about Flintoff staying up late.

Here are the awards to be given:

Team of the Year
Overseas Personality of the Year
Coach of the Year
Young Personality of the Year
Helen Rollason Award (For courage in the face of adversity)
Lifetime Achievement Award
Unsung Hero Award

Here is the main page of it: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/tv_and_radio/sports_personality_2005/default.stm

I can't find the nominations for each award though.

But I hope Flintoff and the England cricket team wins the awards. They deserve it. People in the rest of the Europe will actually be surprised about this if they win it, since cricket isn't that big there. Especially since cricket will be awarded above football.

warne got best sports overseas... freddie got sports personality of the year! england got the best team award... what a day for cricket :)

Just saw it. Great that they've won it. And they deserved it. A year to be remembered when cricket won over football.

Maybe Freddy staying up late didn't help his batting, bloody Beeb.
