Warne says he would return if asked

It might have something to do with Ponting retiring, maybe they didn't get along.

Shane Warne believes he is still capable of playing Test cricket if Australia call on his services | Cricket News | Sky Sports

Just read this. Apparently, if asked by Clarke, Warne says he would return to the test side. He's worried about Australia's spin options for next year's double-header Ashes.

Ha well unfortunately AUS probably need Steve Waugh, Hayden back out of retirement to sure up the batting far more than another bowler for the ashes. The pace bowling talent is good - but the batting is the problem.

I don't think he will and I hope he doesn't. It would ruin his legacy. Imagine how Lyon would feel giving up his spot for someone that has been retired for 6 years.

It will be a stupid thing to do really. I hope Warne does not ruin his legacy by going through with this decision. Also CA is high unlikely to accept this proposal.

Warne has also clarified on twitter. He said that he "could" play if asked but wasn't angling for a recall.

^Yeah exactly, he was asked a question and he answered it. As usual with Warne, anything slightly interesting he says gets reported...and suddenly we get a storm in a teacup.

This was a theory going around last year too when Ponting relinquished the captaincy. There was also a theory going around that Warne would gladly sign up to play Test cricket again, but only if HE was captain.

Cricket Australia really has to put a lid on this stuff, otherwise any ex-player could cause a media circus by saying 'oh i want to play again too'. That's a quick way to undermine your current team. CA says that Warne would need to play Shield cricket, but it doesn't really mention how MUCH Shield cricket - maybe one match would do it :p Then you have the Big Bash too, Brad Hogg got back in the T20I team by playing Big Bash only, surely Warne would be able to as well.

I don't see why everyone is going pants about it really, this isn't Afridi playing the quit game for personal gain, this is a man that truly wants to help his country come away the victor in one of their trademark sporting events. Too bad it's not going to happen eh. :p

I think he was just putting on a bit of shrewd PR for Melbourne Stars. He's said it a few times since retiring, but he always says he needs to be asked back and CA always say that Warne needs to return to first class cricket to be in contention. So there's a sort of understanding between the two, but not between Warne and the public. So if he says something like this, then the couple of lines about the Stars and a picture of him in his uniform are published not only across Australia, but around the world.

I would have liked for him to play, to see if he still has it now.

I seem to recall talk back in the late 80s of calling Boycott out of retirement, and I'm sure again talk of Milla for Cameroon after he'd retired and possibly someone like Pele.

They are generally fantasy speculation, involve someone who was good a few years previous and the argument of whether an ordinary player in the prime is better than an exceptional player well past retirement let alone their prime.

I doubt it would happen, and the aussies would open themselves up to ridicule even if it did pay off.

Still it isn't as embarrassing as continued suggestion gRamps should be called up to the England squad into his late(r) 30s, a cringeworthy suggestion for someone who pretty much failed first time and was doing ok but no more second main time. Move on people, Warne isn't likely to relive his glory days any more than gRamps was likely to be a case of third time lucky :noway

If liz asked him he'd definitely play.

Except she's ENGLISH so why would she....................!?!?!?!?!? :facepalm

maybe he's not got the dexerity anymore and she's acting as a double agent. if there's anyone who's gonna know the state of his fingers these days it's liz.
