Windows XP in Start Up Loop

So, Since about Thursday evening when I tried to install a new anti virus software. Obviously I had to re-start the computer to fully get rid of it, but now it's stuck in a start up loop.

Every time I start it up it gives me 5 options
1. Safe Mode
2. Safe Mode with command prompt.
3. Safe Mode with Networking
4. Last Good Known Configuration
5. Start Windows Normally.

If I pick any of the 5 options, it attempts it, and then just shuts down and I'm back at the beginning. So I am now in the Bios Setup and checking out but none of it means too much to me. In the Boot Device Priority, it says the 1st Boot is the 'PM-HL-DT-STDVD-ROM....' then the 2nd boot device it the '1st Floppy Drive' and then the 3rd Boot Device is '3M-ST325......'

I have checked this out on computer forums, but I don't really understand what it's trying to tell me, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have a laptop that is used primarily, although even that is slightly buggered now. Only had it about 10 months and the fan has blown on the laptop. So I have to use an external fan to keep it cool. If not it shuts down after about 5 minutes..

But with the XP computer, I know I should get another one, but I can't be bothered to shell out around 700 CHF for a new computer that might not get used too much. I am the primary user of both computers.

I think that you have to reinstall the window.
To do this, set the first boot device to DVD-ROM and insert the XP CD in the DVD ROM.Then restart your computer. When it will start,a screen will appear with message that,"Press any key to boot from CD".
Press any button and it will take you to the XP boot setup. You can repair or install the window from there.(Prefer Repair)

Im not so sure that we actually have that CD anymore?

You have to get your hands on an XP disc so that you can run some repair options. I'm thinking your boot table may be corrupted... Short of that, you may need to reinstall--though this very well could be a hard disk issue too.

If you want to back up your data, I'd suggest you download a Live CD of a Linux distribution (Ubuntu's default distribution is a Live CD--you can run the OS from the CD drive) and copy the required data over. But at the end of the day you're going to need the XP setup disc or a new setup disc if you wish to change your OS.

I had the same problem, mine ended up being a processor (something unrelated I guess) but try to repair using the xp disc

Sell windows xp on ebay, amazon or to your neighbor buy windows 7 and cheers you have got a much better os:banana2

reallly now it has been 9 years and people still using xp :facepalm

How stupid can you get

Do you have a Windows XP CD?
If you do, put the CD in, let the computer boot from the CD, and select the recovery console when it comes to the menu. (R)

Now, follow instructions.. (I don't remember what all used to come.. ) :p

In the command prompt, type:
fixboot C:

Let the process complete.

Take out the CD, and Restart your computer.

See if windows boots now. If it is still in the loop, first try Safe mode. If nothing works, put the CD in and restart.
Boot from the CD again, and repeat the earlier steps till you get to the command prompt.

Now, type:

Fixmbr
>Enter

Now, let the process continue, and restart when it finishes. (Remove the CD)

Hopefully it should work the first time.

Were there any viruses? If there were, Microsoft recommends not to use FixMbr.

There is another thing you can do, but first try these.
Good luck :)
