Well, some like to learn swimming first and then take to the sea, some like to take to the sea and learn to swim. If you are of the second type, take the plunge. If you do, let me wish you the best of luck mate!!:cheers

Thanks for the great advice MB. Luckily enough, I have already been involved in several musical shows, steadily working my way up the rungs. Last year, I had more of a chorus role in West Side Story (as Gee-tar, Jet Boy) and High School Musical :p (as a Jock)... and the auditions for the latter were a real eye opener, I completely cocked it up! Haha. However, this year, auditioned for Anything Goes...everything went great and got the part of Lord Evelyn Oakleigh (that's the supporting male (or 2nd male character) for anyone that doesn't know the show). It's great and I'm really looking forward to it.

Now for the X Factor... :p

Simbazz, would Britain's Got Talent suit you more?

Maybe, but the world of judging and what not can crumble things. I'd rather work hard and do things the old fashioned way tbh.

So, who is going on with a view to establishing a career and who's going on just to 'be on TV'?

Well thats a very good question. To be honest, I would hate to make a tit of myself on telly, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't looking forward to being recognised in places (and a shedload of adds on facebook :p) if I get featured to be honest! But another part of me is just wanting to forge a career in singing, but with no experience, I won't be complaing if I don't; 1) manage a whole career and 2) get through the auditions if I get that far!
So yes I want to make it in the industry, but its not the end of the world as I have other things to fall back on. But like I have said before, I'm taking every stage as it comes. I feel its a win-win situation!

Good for you! As a serious performer, I get a little annoyed by people who go on there just to 'be on TV'! To be honest, that part of it meant very little to me. I wasn't like 'Oh My God, I'll be on TV', it was more like 'OK, so I'll be on TV. '

Edit: My opinion of X-Factor and its predecessors (Pop Idol/Popstars), is that the judges are not only rude, but also very unprofessional. You just do not laugh at someone when they're auditioning for you! Also it seems that many winners, such as Steve Brookstein (who I can sing under the table, but that's another story), don't seem to last the course (maybe they're not given the support they need from their judge or maybe they just don't work hard enough and take it for granted that they're in the business now so they don't have to work at it - which of course is rubbish!)

Totally agree. The amount of money people waste on the winning contestant in musical talent shows is unbelivable to be honest, how many times have we seen it? Someone wins the X Factor, gets the Xmas number one and thats all we hear of them (perhaps a couple of average songs after that, Shayne Ward for example). Its not worth the money! But still, I have never won the X Factor, so I don't really know what goes on behind the scenes after the X Factor goes off air! But surely you can release a new song now and again!

I'm a serious performer, so I'm definitely not in it for the TV aspect of the show, though it's completely different to anything I've done so far. However, having read your advice MB, I'm going to take it with a pinch of salt, and if I don't go through, I don't go through (though I would prefer to be given constructive criticism).

And as a serious performer, you have every right to do so. However, shows like this are extremely unprofessional: any proper professional audition would not slag you off to your face, they would merely not call you at all. Unfortunately, people like Cowell very rarely do constructive criticism. ;) I know it's for the sake of 'good TV', but that still makes it unprofessional in my view.

Proof of how unprofessional this show is:

Fancy asking the auditionees to reshoot their auditions? As the article says, it won't be the same second time round, not to mention a complete waste of people's time. People who want to be true professional singers should give this show a wide berth, but if you're just going along for a stab at it, and if it comes off it comes off, why not?

Huge, massive bump, but any updates from people on how they did, how far they got and so on would be great. Did you get through the producers' auditions, through the judges first audition? One thing I would say, is I prefer the new live auditions - myself I think that if you're a true performer, you'll prefer auditioning in front of a crowd rather than four judges and a desk.

Update on tonight's show (I got drawn into watching it and now have a mild interest in who wins) - those two idiots, John and Edward have finally gone. About time, they were useless.

I might have another stab at it next year - I see my singing and acting as two entirely separate things and I know I can sing at least twice as well as I did last time. Anyone else even remotely considering giving it a bash next year ( can't see the show stopping - it's making Cowell far too much money, while also uncovering the odd gem like Leona Lewis and Alexandra Burke)? :)

Edit: By the way, what was the procedure for applying this year - did you have to reserve a place, or was it a case of just turn up and wait? When I applied for the first series, I had a letter in the post saying that I'd been chosen to audition...
