Xbox and free to play games

I'm a bit of a tech dinosaur. I basically know what the on/off switch does and that's about it. So......I read that a Star Trek game can be downloaded and played for free on Xbox One. I actually managed to download the game and pressed the start button expecting to commence captaining a Federation ship.....only to be directed to a screen that asked me what type of paid subscription that I would prefer to have!

I gather that it's only free to play during a months free trial period. I suppose a months free play is better than none at all.
