Who here is in favor of a cricket all star game. Something along the lines of whats being done in North American games.
It could be something like east vs west or north vs south. Fans vote in the best players for both tests and ODIs and than they best from both sides play something like 2 tests and 3 ODIs. It could go around the world hosting it in a different country(cricket country) every year. There could be competitions like fastest bowlers, most sixes.

I know that this sort of thing has been tried out with that Australia vs World thing but its not really the same.
I'm thinking this could be entertaining and could bring in fans if organized correctly.

Hmm... all-star would be interesting to watch and would allow us to validate/run away and hide from our claims of who would make a good XI for the year. The only issue I see is scheduling it, since cricket calendars are already pretty packed as it is. Also, the fact that many players (especially the older ones) tend to take a rest when something like this comes around.

But it would be interesting to have maybe an Asian XI take on a ROW XI. In fact, I think this sort of stuff has already happened sometime in cricket in the form of charity matches, so maybe it's just time to legitimize it some!

EDIT: I added a poll.

Yea scheduling is probably the biggest issue especially with all these 20/20 league being started.
I would really like to see this sort of thing come out and be organized annually.

thanx for the poll sohum.

Please, Australia XI vs. World XI and still dominated! :p I'd like to see another Australia XI and see how they do this time around without the big names.

lol The voting would be rigged so badly like the NBA. Yao Ming and Yi and his chinese army voting like 50% of the votes will be similar to Tendulkar (even when hes injured) and the indian army.

He would top the lists no matter what. ;)

If they were to do this again then there would have to be a proper tour put in place.
If you remember last time when a World XI played Australia in 2005, the World XI hadn't become settled and weren't able to gel together since they hadn't played together. As a result Australia won each game.

maybe the players could be voted in by their peers or something like that, I was thinking about that fact that a large amount of Indian fans would vote for Indian players even if some didn't deserve to get in.

Isn't the point of the All-Star game that the most popular players plays? So if Afridi gets in over Chanderpaul, well, isn't that the point? The player the people want to see, whether they deserve it or not?

Yep, be nice for an annual charity event or something. Like they have in the past. Use a World XI selected from a panel of greats. But only let players who want to be in it take part. In the past i've felt people have just done it for the pay and not given a crap about trying hard.

I reckon Australia, South Africa, India, and maybe England would beat a World XI if they got to host them. There's so much more to play for when you're defending your country as opposed to defending the rest, nothing can really make the World XI care as much.

In tests yes. SA and England haven't been having the greatest time in ODIs of late. Nothing's a sure thing there.

It could be quite an interesting prospect to have the top team at the beginning of a year play a composite World XI in one Test during the home season of that country either that or the following year. It could be quite complex with the FTP and all and so may be tough to schedule but could be interesting. If we were to compile a Test XI to play against Australia in Australia, it would certainly draw quite a large crowd:

1. Virender Sehwag
2. Graeme Smith
3. Gautam Gambhir
4. Shivnarene Chanderpaul
5. Kevin Pietersen
6. Kumar Sangakkara
7. MS Dhoni (wk)
8. Andrew Flintoff
9. Zaheer Khan
10. Ishant Sharma/Makhaya Ntini
11. Dale Steyn

Don't think England could. I saw the New Zealand beat the World XI in early 2005. An amazing innings from Fleming.

The only problem is that they tried that already (with the Super Series) and it failed miserably to live up to the expectation of a close contest. I think one often overlooks the team aspect of cricket. In that regard, having two composites battle each other off would probably make for slightly more even cricket.
