I can't wait till Sehwag retires and averages 55.

Hopefully he plays more cricket overseas and less at home and gets exposed for the fraud that he is.

Fraud? I never knew frauds average 50 in Test Cricket, With 2 triple 100's and a strike rate of 78.

Funny seeing as how you had the 3rd leading wicket taker in the history of the game on your side. You also had Harbhajan who is one of the leading wicket-takers of the past decade.

The thing is, I don't think Sehwag is capable of scoring a gritty hundred in tough conditions, something Hayden has done plenty'a times.
That's true. I agree. But, at the same time, would Hayden go out an blaze 80 off fifty balls in the 4th innings of a Test match while chasing 300+ ? Not that he doesn't have the ability, but Viru is able to just forget all pressure and blaze away. When it comes off, it is awesome, and India are pretty much set to win. Doesn't come off, he is left looking like an idiot. Hayden doesn't do that, and while that is what makes him great, it is this same reckless, laugh in the face of danger attitude that makes Viru great.

Now, while I understand that you might not appreciate this in a player, a lot of us do. Especially Indian fans, cause he's done it time and time again, not only to win, but to save matches as well. And that's while he'll always be a legend for India. Same way Hayden will be for Aus (Sorry, but I don't think he goes down as an all time Test Batting great.).

Either way, they are equal in my eyes...

BTW, 2 bowlers don't make up a bowing attack, and Bhajji sucks :p

You think Sehwag is better than Ponting???? You really are bias then...... He is an arrogant looking bugger and I hate him lots, but Ponting is a superb batsman, easily better than Sehwag

EDIT - Actually I would take a Dravid in his prime form days over Sehwag

I'd take all those players ahead of Sehwag. I'd take Graeme Smith and Shiv Chanderpaul ahead of Sehwag as well.

Don't get me wrong, Sehwag is a quality batsman. Slightly overrated however. His just no where near Matthew Hayden and probably never will be.

Slightly overrated, maybe. But he is as good as MH, just in a different way. Again, you might not like his reckless, attack at all costs style, or his method of relying on hand-eye co-ordination over technique, but doesn't mean he isn't good.

I think the poll is very fair now.

Sehwag will NEVER go down as an all time batting great. As Ben said a few pages back, he is a glorified slogger. Graeme Smith has far more chance of going down as an all-time great in my eyes. He's a battler, he's led his country from a young age and got them to the stage they're at now, and he's a bloody good batsman. Sehwag will just go down as one of the major overachievers in an era dominated by the bat. Guys like Pietersen, Smith, Duminy and Clarke have far more chance of going down as all-time greats. Just another example of Indian fans massively over-rating one of their players.

Well Hayden's a very good batsman too, but he's not considered a great outside Australia I'm afraid (Now I know some of your English friends will run to your rescue here! :p). Sehwag in all likelihood will have a shot at greatness over the remainder of his career. At the moment he is a fantastic batsman.

Hayden's scored twice as many centuries as Sehwag. Opening Batsman's statistics tend to deterior rate in the latter half of their career so I wouldn't get my hopes up on Sehwag matching Hayden by the time his career is all said and done.

*sigh*

Right, I give up. It's quite clear neither side wants to agree that both players are equal, so I'm just wasting my time here...

That's because you're wrong ;) They're not equal, Hayden's far better. Hayden scored alot of his runs in an era dominated by the ball and by some of the greatest fast bowlers in the world. Sehwag's scored his runs on flat bowler friendly conditions against mediocre attacks (in comparison with the likes of Donald, Pollock, Wasim, Waqar, Ambrose etc). Sehwag's a good player, but no more than that, he's certainly not a great. Comparing Sehwag with Gayle would be a far better comparison.

No. Just anyone outside of India and even some Indians like Precamb

You're almost right. They are almost equal, but Hayden is a better batsman, I would take him over Sehwag with the other opener being Smith. With Sehwag you always have a chance to get him out, Hayden was just demoralising.

Sehwag and Hayden are two of the greatest batsmen of modern era. I think our English and Aussie members are going a bit too rude on Sehwag. He has scored two triples in tests- remember that- thrid to do so after Lara and Sir Don. Hayden is slightly ahead of Sehwag when it comes to consistency or playing according to the situatuon- that's it. Otherwise they are totally equal. And yeah, Sehwag's a slogger- what's wrong about that? He just loves to play the game in his own unique style. I see no wrong in this. And rating KP, Gibbs, Martyn, and Andy Flower is quite silly. You should keep in mind that he's only the third player to score two triples in tests. He has scored the fastest triple in the history of cricket as well, and that against the Proteas, the best team in the world ATM, against the same bowling attack they have now. Look at his career strike rate! He is miles better than Andy Flower or Martyn. And one thing, this argument has reached a dead end. The English and aussie guys are throwing mud at Sehwag and the Indian guys are throwing mud at Hayden. Think logically guys. Forget which country these two guys belong to. Just assume they are two players.
