Lack of support behind Sharma's alarming decline

Too much too fast. He was hyped up way too much and now he cant live up to the hype. He has potential and good talent but he cant perform under the pressure of being a leader of a bowling attack. He had a few injuries and he just wasn't able to get into the form he was in before those injuries.
He needs to work a bit more on his game, get a stock delivery that he can always count on. Maybe seek some advice from a former pro that can help him, someone like Allan Donald would be good for him, just to guide him and show him what he has to do and how much work he has to put in for him to be one of the top bowlers at this level.

thats what am saying. if a guy like sajid mohammad can get a spot in the team, then ishant surely can !

Never heard of him.

Even with the right person he hasn't been near our test team for two years.

I do not see many Indian members backing Ishant and hailing him as best bowler. Even Munaf Patel is better than him. Only issue is attitude problem with Munaf.

and the fact that he is our beloved dadaji ! :p

seriously though, if your considering form, then munaf is miles ahead of sharma !

but lets not forget the way munaf steamed into the indian side with his deadly inswinging yorkers and lethal speed.(ah the irony of it)

i still remember the 2006 england series where he took 7 wickets in his debut !

Sadly when you remember Munaf for bowling, that game only comes to mind considering he has played so many games after that.

i seriously dont understand what happens to these guys.

nehra, RP singh, zaheer, ishant, munaf, agarkar etc all used to bowl 140+
when they were first introduced...and then the rest is pretty evident !! :doh:facepalm

they come out as being 140+ guys but when they start playing test cricket they realize that bowling fast gets you nowhere. It might work in domestic cricket but not against test batsman.

why not develop their skill to bowl line and length with the same pace ?

i dont recall lee or akhtar cutting down their pace even after bowling for over 5-6 years !

  • Nehra is about the same speed that he was, prior to his injury, from 130-140kph.
  • RP Singh was a 130kph bowler prior and post T20 World Cup. In that series, with ideal atmospheric conditions, he produced the odd spell over 140kph.
  • Ishant Sharma spent most of the Australia series at around 135kph and bowled at that speed in the recent ODI. He has lost around 5kph from his top speed and his effort ball, but most deliveries remain at the same speed.
  • Munaf Patel was never consistently at over 140kph - if you look at the youtube clip of his debut series, when he is bowling to Flintoff, you'll see the deliveries in the mid 130s and the yorker to Hoggard on Youtube was shown at under 130kph. If you watch him in Test cricket, you'll see that he occasionally does bowl 140kph, as he did on debut. His ODI bowling is often at 130kph, but that is because he feels he should concentrate more on line and length in that form of the game, and perhaps rightly so.
  • As for Agarkar, I could not see him when he first came on to the scene, but Cricinfo commentary for the Irani Trophy match said he was bowling quickly. Moreover, I don't think he was ever particularly rapid, nor has he lost considerable pace - he can still crank it up on his day, judging from his last few ODIs.

They just need some protein supplements or to eat meat. I know plently of Indian folk here who eat meat, you'd think someone whose career depends on it would eat meat or at least protein supplements. I really cannot fathom an excuse for why they bowl so slowly compared to the rest of the world. I am sure they have the best nutritionists that money can buy, what the hell is going on there.

Its all in the mind. Mental conditioning for our fast bowlers is very important. They must be taught this at the very start of their cricketing careers. The problem is, we dont teach them all those things. We teach them everything apart from what needs to be taught.

Are you serious man? It cannot me something so minor. India is the richest cricket team by a longshot, they probably have the best resources available to their players, everything from nutritionists to sports pyschologists.
