The Australian government has made a formal apology for the past wrongs caused by successive governments on the indigenous Aboriginal population.

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd apologised in parliament to all Aborigines for laws and policies that "inflicted profound grief, suffering and loss".

He singled out the "Stolen Generations" of thousands of children forcibly removed from their families.

About time, wouldn't you say?

I am not sure what an apology would mean to the Aboriginies. All will not be forgiven. And who will accept this apology?

There are lot of countries which owe appologies to all sort of countries. Well atleast Australian govt had in them to do so.

I heard that America had apologised to the Indians and other countries had apologised to their indigenous communities and that it was about time that we had apologised.

We watched it in French class. It is quite sad for what happened to the aborigines.

y should we apoligize to the aboriginals for something that happend 50 years ago aboriginals arnt the only people in australia that got there kids taking of them other people did to

Here are some aborigines thoughts on today.

You sir, are a idiot.

This will hopefully help them move on. Every aboriginal has been hurt deeply by what has happened. What happened was wrong, and it is great that Rudd is apoligising on behalf of Australia. Obviously we can't take away the pain that has been caused, but hopefully we can go some way to fixing the relationship between the indigenous, and the white people.

Did you know that the latest aborigines were taken from their families in the late 1970s.

He's not really an idiot. How one can apologise for something they didn't do is beyond me. However, if it makes them feel better then it's ok I suppose, but it can't be a sincere apology.

Well i think it was the right thing to do by Mr Rudd. But i think compensation to the aborigines is risky for a couple of reasons. First it said in the paper today that some aboriginal commentators said compensation would be taken easily. The thing is some aborigine's have spent there money on alcohol and drugs. Which should NOT be tolerated. So this is how the whole thing started sort of. First you got the 'Stolen Generation' where political people took aborigine children from there families because they thought they were not being brought up well. Than you have today. Us offering compensation to the aborigine people. I think it is there choice once they receive that compensation, to use it for the good of there country and family, or for alcohol, drugs and so on. Yes words don't solve it but i think Mr Rudd has taken us slightly into a better direction. It is a death trap through and through or a dream for the aborigine's. They must make good use of the money they should receive and clear the whole rift between the white Australians and the black Australians. It is a really complecating issue. But it is pivotal in this country's future.

Yes that may be true, but this is to try and help the aborigines move on and get over this and try and start a new chapter in Australia's history. Just like Mr Rudd said.

The bottom line is that an apology is the most the aborgines/american slaves/native americans/other indigenous population are ever going to get. No-one is every going to agree to reperations. The last figure quoted for slavery reperations in the states was $4 trillian or something.
It's an important step and greatly to Kevin Rudd's credit and, one has to say, greatly to the shame to John Howard who would never contenance the idea.

so in 50 years when all the imagrants in detetion camps get out will we have to say sorry to them to

Reminds me of when we had the local government near where I live apologised to the relatives of those who were accused of being witches and were burnt.

I do thing it is good of the Australian government though as when i was in Aus I did feel that everyone treated the Aborigines pretty poorly. Maybe this will break down some boundaries?

Just think how you would feel being them. Being *****, tortured, no family and having to be a slave for a white family for your whole life.

You would be haunted forever. The pain would be so bad, but this might be one step towards perhaps helping them get over the pain suffered.

people today off all races who get there kids taken off them are *****, tortued, and im sure not every single aborignal got ***** and trortued
