Hoping to win the second title for the team, and the third consecutive for me.

Hoping Davy Jacobs fires just like he did in the last matches. A lot depends upon Cliffe Deacon and Dippenar.

All the best @El Loco May the best win!

Gestetner Diamond Eagles' decision to bat first was a good one, as they soared to a huge 199-run total in the final. Davy Jacobs' 53-ball 84 and Boeta Dippenaar, who has been the star of Gestetner Diamond Eagles' entire campaign, added a 146-run stand for the opening wicket. From there, it was fait accompli. Jacques Rudolph finished the innings with a blitzy 32. Ian Blackwell, Wes Durston and Charl Langeveldt picked a wicket apiece, but them and the rest of the Somerset Sabres' bowlers were way too expensive.

Gestetner Diamond Eagles win Champions League for the second time! Somerset Sabres fall 39 runs short, in what was, a pretty average chase for a final. Somerset Sabres were stressed into maintaining a high run-rate from the beginning, and they failed. Wickets at regular intervals kept the momentum on Gestetner Diamond Eagles' side, and even though Somerset Sabres found a valiant Graeme Smith innings to guide them to the win, it only anchored them down as it did not affect the run rate in a positive way. Roger Telemachus was the star bowler with a 4-wicket haul.

Hell Yeah! A hat trick of Champions League T20 wins for me.

Dippenaar and Jacobs played way too beautifully and with Telemachus' bowling. It was just too good. As well as Dippenaar played, it was Jacobs who brought the cutting edge to our opening batsmen, and also all the bowlers, especially van Der Wath and Dillon du Preez throughout the tournament! YAY!

Also, NMA you are one of the greatest league managers here. This league was so well managed and organised. Your ideas and hard work often goes underappreciated. But man! You are top notch!

As soon as I saw that first innings total I knew it was all over. Valiant effort from Smith but everybody had to contribute and they didn't.

Great idea for a league, been enjoyable to be a part of, keep up the good work :thumbs

SUMMARY

The 2006 edition of the Champions League Twenty20 was the third iteration of the tournament. It was played outside of England for the first time since its inception.
The hosts; Australia hosted the tournament in two different cities as opposed to just one which was the standard for the tournament in both of its previous seasons.
Melbourne Cricket Ground hosted eight out of the seventeen games, including the final. The Junction Oval hosted the rest of the nine games, including the semi-final.
This was the biggest tournament in terms of the number of participants, number of localities the games would be played in, and also the number of games till date.

Six teams competed in a single round-robin format, which was followed by a three-team knockout which consisted of a single semi-final and obviously, the grand finale.
Three points were awarded for a win, and one point for a tie. Teams that finished with identical points at the end of the pool stage were segregated via net-run-rate.
The top team at the end of the pool games would advance straight to the final, whereas the second and third ranked teams would play for the second spot in a semi-final.

The six teams that competed were - Canterbury Wizards, Diamond Eagles, Sialkot Stallions, Sinhalese Sports Club, Somerset Sabres and the Victorian Bushrangers.
Canterbury Wizards became the first team to play in the Champions League from New Zealand after beating Auckland Aces in the final of their local twenty20 tourney.
This was also the first time an Australian team was taking part in the Champions League i.e. Victorian Bushrangers. Two of their homegrounds played hosts this season.
England and South Africa's teams were taking part for the third time in a row, being the most consistent. Whereas Sri Lanka and Pakistan's had missed a season each.

The Diamond Eagles of South Africa emerged victorious by the end of the season, becoming the first team in Champions League history to secure two championships.
Diamond Eagles defeated Somerset Sabres in the final of the league, in somewhat of a convincing fashion to claim the title at the historic Melbourne Cricket Ground.
Somerset Sabres were given a whopping 200-run target to chase, and they seemed to be on the right track until Roger Telemachus' 4-fer derailed them completely.

On their way to the final, the Diamond Eagles lost only one game. Their opener, and it was against the same opponent they faced in the final - Somerset Sabres.
After losing their first game, they went on a bit of a winning streak and defeated every team in the league to secure the top-spot and qualify directly for the final.
Whereas, the Somerset Sabres finished second in the league rankings with two defeats and had to play the Victorian Bushrangers in the semi-final at their homeground.
The semi-final was a closely contested game, but eventually the Somerset Sabres got one over the team that was coined as the favourites, and advanced to the final.

Throughout the season, we saw plenty of exceptional performances but perhaps, none more scintillating than Brendon McCullum's hundreds, on two different occasions.
His centuries earned him the moniker of being the 'Twenty20 mercenary'. Truly, one of the most horrifying sights for a bowler to behold is his brutality towards the ball.
Roger Telemachus had the most significant spell of the tournament, as he bagged a 4-fer in the final against the Somerset Sabres to see his team across the finish line.

Boeta Dippenaar was the top-scorer despite Brendon McCullum's hundreds. His consistency throughout the season outshined Brendon McCullum's two incredible innings.
Shane Harwood of the Victorian Bushrangers was the joint leading wicket-taker with Keith Parsons of the Somerset Sabres. They both claimed twelve victims each.
Cliffe Deacon played an important part in Diamond Eagles' triumph. Picking up wickets and scoring runs all together. He made quite the impact in this tournament.

MATCHES OF THE TOURNAMENT

5th Pool Match, Sialkot Stallions vs Somerset Sabres - Sialkot Stallions won by 2 runs
Junction Oval, St. Kilda

The fifth match of the tournament turned out to be an absolute thriller. It was played between the Sialkot Stallions and the Somerset Sabres at the Junction Oval.
Sialkot Stallions elected to bat first even though there was a little something in it for the fast-bowlers, but their strength was defending a total so they batted.
Imran Nazir and Kamran Younis started the innings in a flurry, adding a quick 37-run opening-wicket stand before the latter was dismissed in the fourth over.

Khalid Mahmood, the number three of the Sialkot Stallions carried on from where Kamran Younis left. Him and Imran Nazir added a massive partnership together.
The two contributed in a 108-run partnership by having the same style of play, more or less. In a partnership, which came to its end in the sixteenth over.
Khalid Mahmood, in spite of coming out to bat after Imran Nazir, achieved his fifty before him because of some feisty batting against the Somerset Sabres' attack.

Marcus Trescothick's men were unable to find the breakthrough they desperately needed, and that resulted in them being thrashed for runs all around the park.
Ian Blackwell took up the challenge for them, and found them said breakthrough by dismissing Imran Nazir an over after he completed his fifty, lbw-style.
Charl Langeveldt bowled the next over, and he unfortunately couldn't carry on the momentum from the previous over and ended up conceding ten runs in that over.

Khalid Mahmood took the charge against Andy Caddick realising that there were only three overs left, and ended up throwing his wicket into Matt Wood's hands.
Richard Johnson's nineteenth over went for sixteen runs, which came off of two sixes and a four, all because of Shoaib Malik's 'hit-out-or-get-out' antics.
Qaiser Abbas, trying to emulate Shoaib Malik, lost his wicket in the final over as his team ended up with a formidable total of 184/4, completing their twenty overs.

Somerset Sabres' openers, Graeme Smith and captain Marcus Trescothick laid the base perfectly for their chase by adding a 45-run flurry from just eighteen balls.
The openers seemed destructive against the new ball, but fortunately for the Sialkot Stallions, their partnership came to an end soon after the third over.
Graeme Smith misjudged a slower delivery from Sarfaraz Ahmed and lobbed it straight to Qaiser Abbas at mid-wicket, ending his innings at just a 14-ball 27.

Mohammad Asif, being the thorn in Somerset Sabres' side, brought furthermore misery by picking up two consecutive wickets in the very next over of the game.
He dismissed the well-set Marcus Trescothick, after he had played a fantastic 12-ball 30-run innings, and then dismissed Ian Blackwell for a golden duck afterwards.
Tho he failed to complete his hat trick, he inflicted enough damage that the Somerset Sabres' had to deviate from their plan and go into a rebuilding phase.

And so, Matt Wood and James Hildreth, their best pair, started playing cautiously and with great grit and determination to re-establish the Somerset Sabres' innings.
James Hildreth played very slowly and made sure that one of the two ends was as safe as it could've possibly been, whilst Matt Wood did all the risky scoring.
The two added a 73-run partnership for the fourth wicket, and brought their team very close to the total. Matt Wood scored a fifty, but was dismissed soon after.

After the partnership ended, the number of runs required for the Somerset Sabres was forty-six off the last four overs. James Hildreth decided to take charge.
But, the very next ball after Matt Wood's dismissal, he became victim to Nadeem Javed's incredible show of athleticism, as he pulled off an absolute blinder.
Two wickets in two successive deliveries did not slow the flow of runs for the Somerset Sabres tho. They still managed to squeeze sixteen off the remaining five balls.

With thirty runs required off the last three overs, it was time for the Somerset Sabres' lower-order to speed things up. Nadeem Javed had other ideas, though.
He gave away eight runs in the over, and it was considered a great over, even though Carl Gazzard was dropped on the last delivery of the over by Shehzad Malik.
Sarfaraz Ahmed was given the duty of bowling the perfect penultimate over, but he failed when it mattered the most. Carl Gazzard smashed him for fifteen.

Mohammad Asif was given just seven runs to defend in the final over, which is still a pretty tough ask, even if there isn't a proper batsman, batting at the crease.
However, he still managed to pull it off by bowling one of the best last overs you are ever likely to see! He gave away only five runs, and won his team the game.
It was a remarkable effort from Carl Gazzard and Keith Parsons, but it went in vain because of Mohammad Asif's incredible death bowling in the final over.

8th Pool Match, Sinhalese Sports Club vs Somerset Sabres - Sinhalese Sports Club won by 2 runs
Junction Oval, St. Kilda

Somerset Sabres were involved in another enthralling encounter, this time against the Sinhalese Sports Club. This game was played in Saint Kilda as well.
After having won the toss, Sinhalese Cricket Club's captain Marvan Atapattu decided it would be best to bat first on a fairly even surface at the Junction Oval.

This decision was almost instantly proved wrong as their opener Kaushal Silva lost his wicket in the first over. Keith Parsons bagged the first wicket of the game.
In the very next over, Marvan Atapattu, Sinhalese Sports Club's skipper followed Kaushal Silva and lost his wicket to an absolute pearler from Richard Johnson.
Mahela Jayawardene, came out to bat next, and was sent back to the pavilion an over later. These three dismissals rocked Sinhalese Sports Club to the core.

Thilan Samaraweera and Tharanga Paranavitana were at the crease, and were left with the difficult task of rebuilding the entire innings for Sinhalese Sports Club.
After being 3 for 21 at the end of the third over, these two players pushed their team's score quickly and steadily, adding fifty runs in the next thirty-one deliveries.
Both players were neck and neck with their score and the deliveries it took them to get there. But ultimately, Tharanga Paranavitana beat his partner to his fifty.

And as soon as Tharanga Paranavitana reached his fifty, he jammed his foot on the accelerator and took the beating to the bowlers, adding twenty runs in no time.
Not only had this pairing successfully revived Sinhalese Sports Club's completely, it also put them in the dominant position for the larger part of the entire innings.
Somerset Sabres desperately needed a breakthrough, and they did find it. It came from Wes Durston. Not from his bowling, but from his stellar fielding effort.

Wes Durston, with a bulleted direct throw from deep mid-wicket ran Thilan Samaraweera out, four runs short of, what would've been, an incredible half-century.
Jeevan Mendis, the next man in, did not let this wicket derail Sinhalese Sports Club's momentum. He smashed Andy Caddick in the next over for sixteen runs.
With three overs remaining, Sinhalese Sports Club were looking for a big finish. Unfortunately for them, Charl Langeveldt pulled their scoring rate back in one over.

Not only did he restrict Sinhalese Sports Club's scoring rate, he also picked up two very important wickets, including the wicket of well-set Tharanga Paranavitana.
Kaushal Lokuarachchi looking to be the aggressor in the next over lost his wicket quite clumsily to Richard Johnson, in an over, that only consisted of six runs.
Keith Parsons bowled the final over and claimed two wickets, and gave away only two runs to limit Sinhalese Sports Club to a 175-run total.

In spite of a late collapse, they managed to put up an intimidating total which is praiseworthy, especially given the fact that their top-order collapsed as well.
Their middle-order did all the heavy-lifting, Thilan Samaraweera and Tharanga Paranavitana in particular. Somerset Sabres gave it away after a great start.

Somerset Sabres' innings began the same way Sinhalese Sports Club's did. They lost their openers early on, and their number three did not last long either.
Dilhara Fernando struck all three times, giving his team the advantage early in the chase. Somerset Sabres basically had to do what Sinhalese Sports Club did.
They had to come back from the dead and put up a fight, win this game with a spectacular chase. It was not going to be so easy, but it wasn't impossible either.

Carl Gazzard took the beating to Sinhalese Sports Club, and added a blistering 10-ball 30. In doing so, Somerset Sabres reached their fifty by the sixth over.
Dilhara Fernando dismissed him in the sixth over tho, bringing the Somerset Sabres' aggressive progress to a screeching halt, just when they truly got going.
Matt Wood, the batsman at the other end took up the mantle of responsibility and played sensibly and cautiously to reduce the constant fall of wickets.

Keith Parsons and Matt Wood put up a slow, yet significant partnership which saw their team get closer to the target, albeit at a slower pace than required.
By the end of the 15th over, Matt Wood and Keith Parsons were batting at a 35-ball 34 and 28-ball 29, respectively. The required rate had climbed past ten.
In the next over, Kaushal Lokuarachchi dismissed Keith Parsons and shook Somerset Sabres' momentum. But, it turned out to be a bad thing for them instead.

Because the next batsman out to bat was Wes Durston, and little did the Sinhalese Sports Club's bowlers knew how devastating he would end up being for them.
But in the meantime, Chaminda Vidanapathirana bowled a very tidy seventeenth over, which only saw seven runs being scored from it by the Somerset Sabres.
Jeevan Mendis' eighteenth over was a mixed bag, as it saw thirteen runs being scored off it, but also consisted of two major wickets. Including Matt Wood's.

Dilhara Fernando, the star bowler for Sinhalese Sports Club was tasked to bowl the penultimate over. Before this over, he had four wickets to his name already.
But Wes Durston did not care for that fact, and smashed Dilhara Fernando for sixteen runs that brought life back in to Somerset Sabres' incredible run-chase.
This over left only eleven runs for the Sinhalese Sports Club's bowlers to defend in six balls, and they didn't even have their best bowler's overs left to do the deed.

And with Wes Durston at the crease, having scored twenty-five runs of just nine deliveries in barbaric fashion, it was not going to a walk in the park for them.
But, you know what they say; 'Fortune favours the brave', and that's exactly what happened in the final over. Fortune did favour the brave in defending those runs.
Charith Jayaweera, who before this over had conceded thirty-one runs in three overs successfully defend the eleven that were needed off the last six deliveries.

The bold decision of giving him the ball worked wonders for Marvan Atapattu, as he conceded only eight runs, bowling to the dangerous pinch-hitter Wes Durston.
Somerset Sabres, after an inconsistent start to the innings nearly chased down the target. But only just nearly. In the end, they fell short by only two runs.

Semi-Final, Victorian Bushrangers vs Somerset Sabres - Somerset Sabres won by 9 runs
Junction Oval, St. Kilda

In the semi-final of the tournament, Somerset Sabres snatched a close win after two failed attempts which saw them come so close and lose. But not this time!
It was the hometeam; Victorian Bushrangers up against the Somerset Sabres. This was basically Australia vs England via proxy, and it came right down to the wire.
Somerset Sabres had beaten the Victorian Bushrangers in their previous encounter during the league stage, and the result of this game was no different than that.

Somerset Sabres won the toss and elected to bat first. Their openers started the innings cautiously, adding twenty-four runs in the first twenty-three deliveries.
Because on the twenty-fourth, Graeme Smith edged the ball straight to the wicket-keeper to give Micke Lewis his first victim of the all-important semi-final.

Somerset Sabres were sailing smoothly up until that point, but to add to Somerset Sabres' misery, Shane Harwood dismissed two more batsmen in the next over.
And continuing that trend, another wicket fell in the sixth over. Ian Blackwell was run out by Andrew McDonald, as he sneakily tried to steal a quick single.
After being reduced to 42 for 4, Somerset Sabres' batsmen started rebuilding the innings. Marcus Trescothick and Carl Gazzard were at the forefront of this.

Marcus Trescothick and Carl Gazzard pushed Somerset Sabres' score past hundred, and soon after that, Marcus Trescothick brought up his fifty. From just 35 balls.
Carl Gazzard was nearing his fifty as well, but a flawed decision from the umpire sent him back into the pavilion, ten runs short of the fifty he fought hard for.

After his dismissal, Somerset Sabres went after Victorian Bushrangers' bowlers with all of their guns blazing, adding 42 runs in 25 balls before being bowled out.
They set up a formidable target of 169 for the Victorian Bushrangers to chase and advance to the final, but it was going to take some bowling to contain them.

Victorian Bushrangers began their chase disastrously. They lost their first three wickets in the very first over. Two to Keith Parsons, and one to a silly run out.
Their fortunates continued as their fourth wicket fell to another ill-advised run out. Which reduced them to 16 for 4, and with a mountain to climb ahead of 'em.
Brad Hodge and Cameron White, two of the more-experienced batters in the side picked up the slack and tried to bring the Victorian Bushrangers back in the game.

The two added a scintillating 113-run partnership for the 5th-wicket to completely resuscitate the Victorian Bushrangers after the debacle that was their start.
Both batsmen achieved their fifties in the meantime. Cameron White achieved his in 32 deliveries, whereas Brad Hodge took a little longer to get there with 40.
This partnership had turned the game on its head, leaving Somerset Sabres in a state of desperation with them needing wickets to make a comeback in this game.

Charl Langeveldt seized the moment, and captured two very important wickets to put his team back on the right track. An lbw, and one with a bullet-armed throw.
In the next over, the well-set Brad Hodge edged a pull-shot straight up in the air which Somerset Sabres' captain, Marcus Trescothick claimed and dismissed him.
Victorian Bushrangers needed 33 runs off 12 deliveries with none of their recognised batsmen at the crease. It was going to be really hard for them to pull this off.

But a flurry of sixes from Mick Lewis' bat in the 18th over gave the Victorian Bushrangers a ray of hope they desperately needed. It also brought the equation down.
With one over to go, the Victorian Bushrangers needed 15 runs. Richard Johnson was given the ball to bowl, and he managed to pull it off for the Somerset Sabres.

Tight lines and lengths from Richard Johnson to Peter Siddle did not allow for him to pass the strike down to Mick Lewis who was timing the ball oh-so sweetly.
Then when he finally gained strike on the third ball of the over, with 14 required off 3, he received a quicker delivery which the batsmen couldn't connect on.

The game was in the bag for the Somerset Sabres as long as Richard Johnson didn't bowl a wide or a no-ball. Which he made sure to not, even if accidentally, do.
The victory was wrapped up nicely, and Richard Johnson put a bow on it by dismissing Mick Lewis with a slower one to leave the Victorian Bushrangers 9 runs short.

HIGHLIGHT REEL

:nz: :wkb: BRENDON McCULLUM 108 (63) CANTERBURY WIZARDS
10th POOL GAME - CANTERBURY WIZARDS vs SINHALESE SPORTS CLUB at Junction Oval, St. Kilda

Brendon McCullum smacked the Sinhalese Sports Club's bowlers around in what can only be described as 'the most brutal fashion the game of cricket had ever seen.'
He brought up a 63-ball century that left all of the spectators in complete awe at the Junction Oval in St. Kilda. This was like something they had never before.

His brutality left the Sinhalese Sports Club's bowlers reeling, none more so than Charith Jayaweera. He finished with an insane figure of 0/73 in his full 4.0 overs.
Because of this innings, the Canterbury Wizards amassed a massive 224-run total. Which was, the highest score by a team in the short history of this league.
This was also the first-ever individual hundred scored in the history of the Champions League. And it came in the third iteration of the league's establishment.

:nz: :wkb: BRENDON McCULLUM 102* (63) CANTERBURY WIZARDS
14th POOL GAME - CANTERBURY WIZARDS vs SOMERSET SABRES at Melbourne Cricket Ground, Melbourne

Brendon McCullum continued his onslaught, and scored yet another hundred! This was the perfect sequel to the stunning knock he played in his game previous to this.
Before the start of this season, there hadn't been any hundreds in the history of this league. And now, we have two. Both coming from Brendon McCullum's bat.
His brilliance in back-to-back innings got him labeled as the first-ever 'twenty20 mercenary', and boy was that nickname absolutely apropos to Brendon McCullum.

This knock propelled Canterbury Wizards' total, and left the Somerset Sabres with a tough ask of chasing down a 185-run target. They did so with ease, in the end.
Though the hundred still culminated in a loss, which ultimately resulted in them getting knocked-out before the knockouts, it was a memorable knock nonetheless.

:saf: :bwl: ROGER TELEMACHUS 4/24 (4.0) DIAMOND EAGLES
THE FINAL - DIAMOND EAGLES vs SOMERSET SABRES at Melbourne Cricket Ground, Melbourne

Roger Telemachus produced a sensational spell of bowling in the season finale. His 4-wicket haul was of great significance in Diamond Eagles' eventual triumph.
Having piled-up a 199-run total in the final of the season, the Diamond Eagles' bowlers made sure that there were no glitches in their sensational championship win.

Roger Telemachus bagged Marcus Trescothick and Matt Wood, Somerset Sabres' most prominantly dominant top-order batsmen before the end of the 5th over.
With only one over left in his quota, Roger Telemachus was spared for the death-end of the innings. He was then brought on to bowl the final over of the innings.
He picked-up two more wickets to his name in said over, and finished the match with figures of 4/24. But, more importantly, his spell ensured the win for his team.
