There are 'oohs' from the crowd as Gooch gets a thick edge with England on only 5/0. Luckily it misses the stumps and they run a quick single.
And on 15/0 Hogg gets a play-and-miss out of Gooch.
And then on 31/0 Gooch is beaten again, this time by Alderman.
We come to lunch. England are 56 with no loss, with Geoffory Boycott on 18 no and Graham Gooch on 36 no.
Not long after lunch, Boycott edges an excellent ball from Dennis Lillee and is gone for 19. England have an ok start with 63/1.
We are at tea and it is 143/1. It has been a slow day. Gooch has been batting very well and is on 94, whilst Tavare has made a decent start with 26.
5 runs after making a special Test century, Graham Gooch plays a terrible shot and is bowled by Hogg. England have a good start with 160/2 (compare with history: 185 all out)
Not long after, however, Tavare edges to the slips and was out after an ok 32. We now have Beefy and Gower batting, hopefully they can add some runs.
3 balls of the new ball and Australia get a play and miss out of Gower.
And then not long later he edges to slips, only on 19.
209/4.
In the last over of the day, Woolmer has an LBW appeal against him. It looks plumb, but he got the "finest of touches" (no prizes for guessing which commentator that comes from...

)
We come to the end of Day 1. England have so far made a total of 236 for 4, with a wonderful century from Graham Gooch and a great start fro the England captain, making a half century.
On the bowling side it is Dennis Lillee who takes the best figures - 2 for 39.
Hopefully tommorow sees more exciting action from the First Test of Botham's Ashes at Trent Bridge.
